i'm just now seeing this! i'm probably going to make the four hour drive to atlanta to see them play at GT since that's the only time they play on the east coast (or near it) this season |

Hello, welcome to my second ever post, I figured I'd share my preview I posted on FB, to try to get some interest going with my friends.
Take with a nice grain of optimistic salt as I have no real formal knowledge, and apologies if TLDR:
Coach Tomasevic continues growing this program into a fringe contender, and I’m super excited to see the development from last year!
The notable senior leader is Outside Iman Isanovic, in a lot of ways this team goes as Iman goes. When she’s on, she can dominate and take over a match. Plays physical with fire and emotion, can sometimes get in her own head (huh, real weird that she’s my favorite player). In general it hasn’t seemed like anyone else can put the team on their shoulders when this happens.
Libero Annika Larson is another senior leader, but more-so in spirit and energy. Unbounding positivity and good vibes radiate from Annika. She was challenged for play time last season by Michigan State graduate transfer Jamye Cox, and I believe she’ll be challenged again this season by another transfer, Sophomore Jaden Ravnsborg from Kansas State.
The final senior, Setter Shannon Shields, will probably see a decent amount of play time, depending on how Ella Snyder performs.
Ella, a junior, is likely the primary setter, but as in years past, if she struggles expect to see a fair amount of Shields. I’m rooting for Ella to have improved, but she has these real long and slow galloping strides that can result in poor positioning to get a good set off. This could be mitigated with better passing, but hey what can you do. Both are decent setters, but not at an all-conference level.
Another impact player will be Junior Opposite Marta Levinska. She can be as dominant a hitter as Iman, but from the right side, and can also be deadly from the service line with a hard downward trajectory float. Since Marta arrived, it has felt like the first time ASU has set up with a true opposite, rather than just putting another Outside there. I don’t know a ton of collegiate indoor history, but I’d bet this has some to do with the way the game has evolved, and also with Coach Tomasevic’s desire to compete with the top flight Pac-12 schools. I’d say the top schools have all had an effective true Opposite for much longer than the middle of the Pac.
The other primary Outside should be Geli Cyr. Slightly undersized but appears to have the athleticism to make up for it. She started playing towards the middle of last season, as a Freshman coming back from a shoulder injury. Started off a little slow, but could tell the talent is there, and she improved as the season went on. Should be poised to take a big step in her development this year.
Middles - Junior Claire Jeter has one spot locked up. She’s a force at the net, and can effectively run a slide, which hasn’t exactly been a trademark for many ASU middles since I’ve been watching. The second spot is probably going to be up for grabs and a rotation of players. Junior Claudia Stahlke saw some time last year and was solid. Graduate transfer Brooke Boiseau, was a big contributor at CSU Bakersfield. She’s coming home as a Chaparral HS grad. Freshman Middle Olivia Johnson is a top 100 recruit and very tall, could push the veterans for play time.
The other incoming freshman is Leah Miller who is an opposite, and should also push for some playing time.
I'm trusting of Coach Tomasevic's process and she has a lot going for her including her pedigree as a player at Washington (with a National Championship and plenty of individual awards), her international background (native of Serbia and played professionally across Europe) and just being a student and steward of the game. Anytime I attend a chalk talk, Coach is super appreciative of the fans, and breaks down thoughts on strategy, opponents and lineups.I’ve enjoyed seeing her build this program up and continually evolving and trying to emulate what the top programs are doing. They were competitive in nearly all their tough Pac-12 match ups last year, and took down a few ranked opponents.
In the Pac-12, I see Washington and Oregon as the strongest teams, but it’s silly to discount UCLA, Stanford and USC even though they might be down a bit from traditionally dominant teams. I see Utah and Washington State taking a step back, but should still be decent. I think ASU is poised to try to jump into the second tier of the Pac-12. In my biased-for-sure-but-honest-attempt-at-being-objective opinion, ASU absolutely should make the NCAA tournament this year, but it’s far from guaranteed.

I attended the Maroon-Gold Scrimmage yesterday, and here's my reaction and update to my season preview: Marta was THE offensive force. I forgot how deadly her back row attacks were last year, but that trend looks to continue this year, and use it even more. Another point of emulation of the top level programs. ASU has rarely employed an effective back row attack. Iman was looking to place shots more and be in control of placement. I'm sure she'll fire up the cannon more in real competition, but it does appear that shes trying to remedy a slight tendency to just hit hard for hitting hard's sake. Ella and Shannon looked good setting. As a lefty, Shannon had a thunderous kill off of a dime of a pass. Her sets were very good in general, even out of system. I think Ella moved a bit better than in the past, but she ended up on the floor a ton. It feels like the dynamic is that Ella is the incumbent, and performed solid, but Shannon is competing hard and gunning for as much play time as possible. Allie Gray, the third string setter, struggled to set a clean ball, but not likely to see very much playing time. The freshmen looked good for freshmen. Leah ended up with a bunch of kills, but her best one was a hard smash down the line, I think on her first total attack. Olivia was pretty involved in getting blocks/touches or at least getting out to the pins quickly to form a tight seal. I'm guessing both will get a decent amount of play time, but probably won't start off as a fixture in the lineup. Serving overall looked pretty good, I think several players are trying to copy Marta's tough serve, and it looked effective. Even known short person, Annika, was hitting some tough floats. I assume she can't contact the ball high enough to get downward trajectory on the serve, but I would have guessed otherwise on a couple. Passing... passing down balls looked about the same, which is pretty shaky unfortunately. We picked up tips pretty well, had a number of pancakes. But, way too many shanks on hard hits. And not the kind of shanks that can be tracked down, shanks that were lines drives into the stands behind. Serve receive was a touch better, but definitely lots of room for improvement, especially considering that was a weakness last year. Blocking I thought was pretty solid. If not throwing it back, then getting good touches, if not getting good touches, then at least making a decent seal so the hitter has to go around or over. I think we have definitely been abused on high hands touches in years past, but hardly any in the scrimmage. Likely a factor of our hitters not executing that, whether or not that's part of the game plan (but it probably should). The only player not suited up was transfer Brooke Boiseau. Nothing notably serious with her on the sideline, so I hope that she'll be in the rotation soon. I think she could be impactful if she can go. All in all, looked good, not blown away though, they look to be building upon last year gradually (not that a giant leap was expected). Hopefully they grow throughout the season like last year. We'll be competitive and should have chances to take down some big time teams, if we run into a good passing night. I'd be happy with a 7th place finish in the Pac-12, but the goal is to be in the top half, and make the NCAA tournament. |

ASU possibly didn't have enough gas in the tank after two games yesterday, including their reverse sweep win, and ended up losing today's game vs. Toledo, to finish the tourney 2-1. Still a pretty solid start to the season.

Sun Devils go 2-1 for the weekend-- still learning, but played hard all weekend! The GT game was unbearably hot-- and loud. Kudos for a team that never gave up and are trying to get better each match.

Kudos for a team that never gave up and are trying to get better each match. unbearably hot. i was drinking multiple bottles of water and still didn't have to use the bathroom. they did well the first three sets, and then the wheels fell off set four. there are some bright spots though! ravnsborg is a gem, but she's not able to completely cover isanovic in serve receive. maybe she'll get there before the end of the season. jeter's good as well, and levinska's blocking is solid, imo. just lots of unnecessary errors and missed break point chances after digging rockets from some of the GT hitters (esp bergmann). like those are the opportunities y'all have to capitalize on. oh. and ro1? where marta has to run all the way around from 4 --> 2? that's rough, esp b/c teams that pick up on it will serve right into that corridor. FIU aced us multiple times Friday during that match in that seam. glad i got to see them play on the east coast, even if it was at GT :S |
