More than one poster has commented on Minnesota needing someone who could fill the DS position better than Kilkelly. I personally feel we had that position covered quite well. Especially, if one player had decided to stay in the Gopher program.....Barnes. And who knows what kind of talent Cami Appiani brought to the table. Now I see decommitted Mandi Morioka has committed to Penn State.
It is quite obvious the MN program, when recruiting, looked at all three of these players for a reason....TO HELP THE MINNESOTA VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM in the DS/L position. However, I certainly do not believe Hugh expected all three of these players to choose the paths they did. When a player makes the decision to move on, it hurts the recruiting/developing aspect of a program
Now, before anybody jumps on this, remember Barnes played DS at Wisconsin for one year before moving into the Libero Jersey. And Morioka decommitted because CC is staying for two more seasons with the Gopher program.

Taking nothing away from Purdue; they're good & a refreshing sight to see in the BIG. But I feel MN's effort was shockingly paltry. They went into the match tied for first place but didn't even show up for set 1; that set was essentially over after the first 10 pt; Samedy made 6 of their 12 pt for the set. What if she hadn't been playing, 25-6? Set 3: MN was up 12-6 & then kinda went flat & disappeared from the set. Difficult to fathom. Set 4: They had the lead at 22-21 and failed to score again. It was to be expected the Gophers would come on court from the start, fired-up & determined to take the play to Purdue. Only Purdue seemed to really want a win. The Gophers indifferent play took their own home crowd out of the game. A blessing that Samedy was on court. Set 3 they were only up 10-6 and that set turned when Caitlyn Newton started serving the Gophers off the court at 13-13. Three aces, an out of rotation call and 4 points later the set was lost 13-21. Set 4 they failed to side out after 22-20 and once Samedy got blocked they were toast. Can't say they played indifferent at all, that's just a really poor assessment of their effort and not giving credit where credit is due, to a really good Purdue team taking it to them.

You're right; it was 10-6. And I began by praising Purdue, as I'm sure you read. However, I still think MN's performance was disappointingly inadequate. A team tied for 1st place should be able to play better.

So fun to watch Purdue on this hot streak.

Really awesome to see Purdue finding their stride, but deserving of a top 4 seed I don't think, I know they have 2 over Wisconsin but too many losses in the B1G and some not so good ones Illini, Michigan State. Should be interesting where they are seeded. I still think Wisconsin gets their seed. They also don't have any more time for signature wins Michigan maybe and Nebraska would be huge but historically by the time of that last week that last match hasn't weighed much into committee seeding.

A genius move?
It's set 4 and the action is halted for minutes At 22-20 MN Newton hit a biq and MN's MB Husemann may or may not have touched the attack which landed well out of bounds. Finally, a touch was called and it is 22-21 MN.
It is J. Johnson's turn to serve But the coach decides to insert a stronger defensive player: Ali Hornung She hasn't played a point in weeks.
Her first two serves are handled well, but the sets, first to Samedy and second, to Miyabe are both blocked. MN calls t.o. now trailing 22-23 Hornung's next serve caroms off toward the left pin and Miyabe's saving second touch drifts over the net and becomes a set for Koch to kill. On match point another difficult serve dives in front of Wenaas. Her contact is a second overpass, but Colvin can't terminate. McGraw gets it airbound but behind Shaffmaster who has to bumpset the ball toward the left pin and Miyabe. The set is 8' from the net and not attackable. Newton secures matchpoint in transition on a biq.

Maybe her change in perspective is what elevated her to the highest achieving libero in her conference.

In the latest press conference, Coach Shondell said that he had confidence in Jael to serve normally, but she had just had a collision with a teammate and got hit with the ball between her eyes. She knew that she couldn’t serve and defend the back court to the best of her ability. She told her coach that during the challenge. So little Hornung was called up by surprise. The move paid out in the end and Hornung will remember it for years to come.

I suppose you have no proof of this.

The lack of proof is what proves it’s true!!!

genius move to insert A. Hornung
Johnson took one off the head on a Miyabe kill at 13-12. It was 10' later when the challenge sent Purdue to the service line. Haven't seen the collision you mentioned.
