Went to my first match in 2 years and was so happy to be there! My thoughts from last nights match: very disappointed in the amount of fans! I'm a season ticket holder in the lower bowl and almost all the season tickets holders in my lower bowl area were no shows. People that I've sat next to for years. On the positive side the fans that were there were very loud and energetic especially the student section! So that was good to see. I like to arrive when the SSC opens at 6pm so I can watch the players warm up. Some random thoughts/observations from warmups: Leo is the tallest player on the team even taller than Ilayda! Westerberg can't pass - shanking balls all over during passing drills. Mia Johnson bombs in warmups. I hope she can get her passing together because she's got a hammer. Same for Kiraly. She looks really good in warmups - very athletic and hits a heavy ball. Speaking of heavy balls - Ilayda hits a heavy ball also and has a very nice jump serve. She needs to work on her vertical though because she'd have trouble jumping over the morning paper. Didn't see Akana at all last night so not sure what's up with that. Joy Umeh for Irvine is pretty special. She's listed at 5'8" but she's got some hops and a live arm. Going to be fun watching her the next few years. The local girl Bailey Darnell played really well last night. She represented. Other than that the highlight of the evening for me was BVS solo stuffing UCI's 6'4" oppo. That was amazing and made the crowd go wild. Quote of the day from BVS about that block: "I’m smaller and everyone thinks it’s a free net when it’s just me,” Van Sickle said. “But peek-a-boo. I’m there.".....LOL..... When did BVS say that? Is there a video clip? lol Cindy Luis' Blog: www.cindyluis.com/2021/11/12/zero-a-great-number-for-igiede/

I’m there.".....LOL..... I’m not going to pretend I know but I think there are multiple reasons for the small amount of fans. One would be the restrictions. I looked around the arena and are mostly old folks, group of friends or husband and wife. Since kids younger than 12 are not allowed, families cannot come. They are not going to leave their kids alone ar night while going to a game. Of course, the no food thing plays a part too. Eating is part of having a good time at sporting events. A couple who sat in front of me were long time ticket holders but no longer come due to moving further away from town. Then there is the financial situation of the pandemic. Some people no longer have a lot of disposable income due to being out of work or needing the money to be used for more important things. I think it’s going to take a couple of years when things go back to “normal” before we get some fans back. We’re only a month remove from the lifting of some restrictions. Still plenty of restrictions to make comimg to the game “humbug”. Probably easier for mainland folks to get fans back due to the financial situation not that dire there and the lower cost of living. Since quite a few of the hardcore Wahine fans are senior citizens, there is also the possibility that many do not feel it’s safe to gather and is playing it safe by staying home.

Even the men's basketball game looked like it was a women's attended game. It was quiet and barely of anyone except the student section.

Island communities have to be the most cautious when it comes to a pandemic, without extreme mitigation efforts it could have decimated the population of Hawaii.

Thanks for posting the match. This Hawaii team looks night and day different than the one that played in pre-season. Looking like a cohesive unit. Every player doing their part. Nice job ladies.

We are at 71% fully vaccinated and up to 81% when they include those that are partially vaccinated. Government makes these mandates with goals to achieve. We have achieved those goals and yet the Governor resists. Then what's the goals for if Government doesn't commit to them like it's residents!?! Now I understand why the legislature is trying to step in to minimize the Governors powers. Even the Dept of Health officials agree with loosening of rules.

The 71% goal went out the window when the Covid numbers spiked into the 1000s when the Delta variant came around. The rules are fine and they’re making us safe. The slow roll out of fans in sporting events are working out good.

What's the reasoning behind Tiff playing over Leo/Akana?

What's the reasoning behind Tiff playing over Leo/Akana? She’s had good games. So have the other two. Coach is all about giving whoever is stepping up in practice the chance to do it in a game and I’m here for it. Also lets the girls sitting that they need to Be ready at all times

I really don’t want to get into why there is a necessity to not rush getting everything back to normal. We’re only in the situation we are in now because of it. Just be happy fans are back, multiple working vaccines are out there for those who want it, and cost effective medication will soon be available for those who don’t and get sick.

And you know it's on a death spiral when only 5,000+ fans came to a UH football game fit for 9,000 people! 1k of those fans were students! The rules are too strict and stupid and I hope the faster the legislature steps in, the better for our Sports programs! One has a higher chance catching Covid at a luau or walking the strip of Waikiki than at a college game where 100% attending are fully vaxxed where I or others can't even eat a friggen hotdog or slurp on some saimin!!! Smfh I can eat Kalua pig at a hotel sanctioned luau but I can't even eat a nachos at a college sports game in Hawaii? Unreal!

Smfh I can eat Kalua pig at a hotel sanctioned luau but I can't even eat a nachos at a college sports game in Hawaii? Unreal! I didn’t know luau and the strip were regularly packed with 5000-9000 people sitting with the same group of people indoors or in a stadium setting. Covid spreads at about 15 mins and if you have that same group in a setting in a gym/stadium and you’re not doing anything to be sure the majority of people there stand the least chance of becoming seriously ill from Covid, that’d just be irresponsible governing, more so for an island community. Just look up what the 1920’s era Flu did to entire island cultures. Can’t be sloppy with this stuff. Unfortunately on the mainland we can somewhat afford to be, or at least that’s what people thought. We all know it sucks but the answer isn’t making things less strict, just be thankful things are improving is all. We get past this by being able to come to terms with what we felt were the worst parts. The pandemic affected people in hundreds of DIFFERENT ways but we can all make the personal decision to not feed into it negatively.
