Go Dawgs.
Like I said a month ago, Oregon going 0-2 in Eugene against the Washington schools was really bad for them, because it wasn't going to get any easier when they had to play in Pullman and Seattle.

Ducks knew this weekend would be tough, but they sure didn't play at their best. Both WSU and WA beat them on serving, and Ducks having a lot of struggles with their L2 spot and setting issues. They gotta reset for next weekend. WA will feel good about taking care of the Ducks so easily. Was an easier match than OSU even.

This team has some issues. Really not looking primed for a tourney run - when's the last time we've played well 2 times in a row? Stanford thru ucla was pretty good with the exception of first couple sets vs usc. But we looked like a mess this weekend. Work to do that’s for sure.

I don't see enough UO matches to be close to an expert, but it seems to me Nuneviller is trying too hard to do too much on too many plays and she just can't carry the entire load.
She's a great player and fun to watch...but for many stretches the Ducks seems almost too one dimensional.

If you get 5 KPS on like .650 hitting while playing six rotations in two sweeps, something pretty weird has to happen for there to be any other candidates.

Oregon VB always plays as hard as they can. Usually, that’s their problem. Ouch!

Well, that was the result, but not the match, that I was expecting. Oregon just could not handle the UW serves for the first two sets, got some good passing through most of the third and then lost it again for the end. 10 aces for UW and Oregon OOS for most of the afternoon (though that did not result in as many UW blocks as I would have expected). Meanwhile, UW passed well and Drechsel and Grote were on fire.

That other people weren't able to kill the sets they got doens't mean she's trying too hard to do too much.

Back from the match and it was nice to see a pretty good crowd on hand (2570).
UW fans witnessed a total beatdown of the Ducks in the first two sets. Put simply, Oregon could not handle the UW serve. More specifically, Oregon's freshman receivers, Morse and McClellan, were targeted relentlessly by the Huskies and did not respond well. In the third set, Ulmer went with a two-person serve receive (i.e., Nuneviller and Murphy) and served Nuneviller 80% of the time. This was a good move -- Nuneviller passed very well -- and Oregon finally found some rhythm on offense. At least it worked well until crunch time, when Nuneviller was aced twice by Hoffman (to be fair, these were wicked serves). UW did what UW often does -- pull away in the last five or ten points of a set. In retrospect, Ulmer really needed to change up serve receive midway through the first set.
I'm not sure how much of this match was Oregon playing poorly or UW playing clean volleyball. I'm going to say 50/50. I looked at UW's sideout percentage at some point in the second set and it was 94% (it ended at 81.6%). Obviously, EMP was directing a super efficient offense. On the other hand, Oregon gave UW all kinds of free points (UW only had 9 kills in the first set beatdown) through wild hitting errors, missed serves, and generally sloppy play. Oregon's setting was . . . erratic. The Ducks already ask a lot of their hitters with a fast offense. When the sets are this far off, the timing is just completely disrupted. Nuneviller is amazing and a joy to watch, but even she can't turn setting dross into gold. Correction: she actually does turn more difficult sets to gold than anyone has a right to. But Oregon's setters can justifiably claim that they were fed a lot of junk passes in those first two sets.
Focusing on the Huskies, it was great to see Hoffman return to the front row. She definitely showed some rust from her three-game (?) front row absence, but I'm confident she'll shake that off and be ready for the tournament (knock on wood). Her serving alone is a big asset for the Huskies.
I wasn't too surprised to see Cook go with Bush over Crenshaw at OH2, even though I think Crenshaw earned a shot at starting. But I'm not going to belabor the point as Bush had a lot of nice swings and is a blocking force at the net (I think she is already one of the better blocking OHs in the conference). Eventually Emoni will cut down on her errors and be the player that Cook is envisioning.
Everyone else played well and, though we kind of take it for granted at this point, how about Sam Drechsel? Hitting .700 against Oregon? That's just a big wow. Let's also not forget that she has become a complete volleyball player, passing the ball very well on serve receive, digging, and just making smart plays.
I feel like UW is hitting its stride at the right time. Two more wins, including the revenge match against the Cougars, and we will at least share another conference title. I'm actually a little more worried about Colorado -- strange things have been known to happen in Boulder. Just play like today and it should be no sweat.

Looking toward the NCAAs, UDub would appear to be the PAC's main hope, slightly ahead of UCLA. Huskies are playing to their potential at a time when UCLA has to depend on Luper's replacements to play above expectations.
