USD is gonna have a chip on their shoulder tonight, for multiple reasons. I suspect a close match. The question is, will they be able to serve tougher than they have been all season? If BYU stays in system, they are really hard to beat. It will also be interesting to see how USD adjusts their blocking scheme, specifically against Koerber. Last match she was pounding the ball down the line over and over again. In her post-match interview she said that they scouted and knew that she would have that line shot open. Will USD adjust tonight? We shall see.

Frohling had a tough match against BYU earlier this season, hitting -0.048 in their last meetup (she also hit -.222 in their final spring season meetup). She's arguably USD's best player and I expect her to be a HM AA this year...so they'll have to get her going if they stand a chance against this BYU team. Another question mark is whether we will see Pries or Wilson on the pin tonight...fingers crossed that (a hopefully healthy) Pries gets the start. Benbow and Tastad will need to have a better game than they did against Pacific...USD's serve-receive was awful last game and BYU serves tough. If Benbow performs as amazingly as she did against LMU, it could keep this one interesting.
BYU has undoubtedly had the most issues against tough serving teams...when they're in system Bower is so good at distributing the ball. Passing will be key for them tonight so it's good that Madi Allen seems to be back (but Hifo still seems to be out). To be honest, Koerber was a huge difference maker in their last meetup (.593 with 17 kills). I felt that USD did OK handling BYU's other hitters. I'd also like to see more production out of the middle for BYU tonight...Eschenberg and Gneiting only had 6 combined kills last match and they're both capable of doing more damage.

Hifo is out for the season with a broken hand, but she doesn't really pass. She's a serve specialist and backup setter.

I hope San Diego gets their sh*t together to make this match competitive. The match in Provo was sad, to say the least.

My only question for this match is whether SD can take a set or not. BYU has been playing pretty crisp volleyball all season. San Diego is on a rollercoaster at times.
Oh, I do have a second question: Any intel about USD's other main OH, Pries? She came back for a few matches and played well after her ankle sprain?, but didn't hit in the last one or two matches again. Hope she is not injured.
USD usually blocks very well, but when they played at Provo, they only hit .115 and got 4 blocks. Merle Norman center doesn't have the same crowds and home court advantage as BYU has, so I don't think they can use that much to their advantage.
I think maybe 3-1 BYU for this match.

San Diego celebrating 6 seniors tonight...assume they aren't coming back next year, though they could all go into the portal if they wanted...
Lukes, Tasted, Benbow, Goddard, Turner, Madill.

It will be good to have a battle between these two teams, which is what I’m used to and which has not happened the last three matches. But I really don’t want to see a repeat of what happened in 2018 at LMU, although that may have been the best thing for that team to help them in the tournament.
