Why is the same conversation not being had about Caffey? She routinely slam dunks the ball. The NU staff did a good job of lobbying during the game, JE should have done the same with Caffey. It’s been mentioned a ton in this thread, Stivrins too Stivrins definitely used to do it a lot more. She got called a couple of times during the year and I haven't really seen her do it much since.

The taller assistant if that helps, he’s usually standing closer to the score keeper. Don’t know his name. He was clearly working the refs much of the game, it looked to me like JE finally got fed up with the ref entertaining his stoppage. I’m cross court so I can see it all, just can’t hear what’s being said of course. That would have to be Tyler Hildebrand, and he always stands there because he is in charge of the defense and net play. He definitely isn't the first coach to work the referees, especially if they see repeated violations that go uncalled.
I am very skeptical that Jaylen Reyes was involved on a consistent basis, as he stands with the team watching the back court. Yes it was just the one Tyler I guess. I don’t blame him for working the refs, it was excessive IMO and I don’t blame JE if he had enough and said something. If that’s what happened reading body language.

Its Tyler Hildebrand, he stands to the right (or left whichever way you look at him) of Cook sitting and is the closes to the ref. Every point he is on the Ref contesting something. As a viewer it is tiring to see him complain about a point, because it is every point. So I can see why JE would get irritated about it too. He is already jumping up about a Net violation before the ref even gets the chance to call it themselves. Let them blow the whistle first before you complain about something, because the Ref was actually going to call it in your favor.

Associate Head Coach Hildebrand's talking to R2 was certainly the reason Texas lost.

Sullivan likes to work the refs too for Texas but it’s usually from a distance and the ref can just ignore him at some point. Tyler was routinely right next to the ref demanding some conversation. A head coach is usually given some latitude to approach the ref to discuss the call, get clarification, express displeasure, but it just seemed he wanted to stop play to have a conversation about something all the time.

Nebraska had a wide range. Freshmen hit 500 and 406. Stivrins and Caffey hit above the team average of 1.82. Kubik with 49 attempts brought down the team average with her .041. No hard feelings against Madi. Oh no, I was talking about passing numbers. I thought the team had a pretty great offensive match against that Texas block. I'm trying to see who was dragging down their passing stats. Eye test tells me it was definitely Akana since she got aced a few times at the start and shanked a few balls. But she also got worked on a LOT by all of the good Texas servers. Definitely one of her more inconsistent games. Knuckles as well but not to the same degree. As far as I remember, Madi and Roddy pretty much passed mostly dimes. Could be off tho.

Akana is the best server on the team and plays some great floor defense but her serve receive has been suspect all season long.

With respect to throw calls, I think it's harder for refs to be "consistent" than one might think. In general - not just volleyball - refs are trained to only whistle illegal actions if they are confident they saw the whole thing. So if an OH makes a contact that might be a throw, it could be harder for the ref to see if the setter and/or the middle are jumping in the space between where the ref is looking and where the OH is. On the other hand, if a lot of players are on the ground having had to dive to save the ball, the ref probably has an easier view. It also of course makes a difference if the contact with the ball happens behind the OH's head relative to the ref, or in front of it. Considering that the up ref is the only one who gets to call throws unless the play is very unusual and the up ref specifically asks for help from the down ref trying to unwind what happened afterward - it's tough. For anyone who thinks that the other team got away with more throws than they did - that's probably a good argument for going back to switching sides after every set and midway through the 5th set.

so far this thread is longer than 2020 final 2019 final not 2018 (186 pages) 2017 final 2016 final 2015 final good work.
Definitely not significant enough of a match for the players to have a big celebration.

Just watched the replay. Wow Nebraska freshmen are phenoms. Those freshmen are indeed phenoms. If they can consistently sustain the level of play from the regional final (or even close to it), they are likely to accomplish a lot.
Got home tonight and just watched set one again. The captioning cracks me up, giving the text from announcers as coming from "Alex" and "Missy."
