She posted on her Instagram. Sounds like she is going to beach. Holzman doesn't have anything about Illini in her Instagram bio either FWIW. I've said before, but I don't think she is coming back. Looks like she is going beach. Interesting to see Holzman without the Illini in her bio. I would guess she's already decided she is leaving. Unfortunate she couldn't really show her abilities due to all the injuries.

I thought Barnes was at least as good as Kuper in the scrimmage last week. Better at serve receive. It was only one scrimmage, and they split time at libero, but if the scrimmage is any indication my impression is that there will not be a dropoff from Kuper to Barnes. Sakoda was an adequate passer and could easily see the court as DS. While Kuper will be missed, I don't think her leaving is the disaster I would have thought before I watched the scrimmage. With Holzman leaving and never having seen Stephenson play, we are awfully thin on the left side. If both Kuper and Holzman are no longer on the roster, if Tamas was using the spring to determine if he needed to hit the transfer portal he has his answer. Now he should know he needs to hit the transfer portal for a pin hitter and a DS.
Watching Kuper develop has been fun and I hope she enjoys beach. She deserves it. If Holzman is not going to play I feel terrible for her never having had the chance to find out what she could do. I wish her the best.

We don’t know if Ellie is leaving. She could just be at home taking remote classes and working out with her own specialist.

Or transferring schools too? To leave a year before getting your degree from one the best Public universities, especially guven how she was so vocal & cheering on the sidelines last fall. Maybe she had an injury set back & decised to hang it up. Like I said prior, coming back from an ACL is 1/2 mental.

We need a pin & libero. Brown & Mosher have next year covered. We have 3 OH, Terry, Nunge & Bruna. Stephenson coming in and no other OH’s. I think Tamas will raid the transfer portal early next year.

So much promise. Ellie appeared to be a great teammate. Such a good attitude. As hard as she worked, I'm sure she will be a success in whatever she chooses.

Her intsta-post says she’s medically retiring, so Tamas can keep her on scholarship thru graduation without it counting against their 12 scholarship limit. I don’t know if they are required to do so, or if it is a budgetary decision, but it would be disappointing if that didn’t happen.

Kuper is no longer listed on the roster. However, Ellie is still listed for some reason. We will have five OHs in the fall (including Gregus). Tamas could shift Mosher to the right side this year while Brown sets, which would give us more depth on the outside. Otherwise, I expect he will be looking to pick up a transfer. We definitely need another defensive specialist.
Stephenson will likely not start this year, but I'm looking forward to seeing her on the court. I think she's going to be very good.

It is the right thing, and it signals to future recruits that you have their back, even if they get injured!

From what I know medical retirements get to keep their scholies and they don't count against the 12 limit.
