Looks great, exit237a. Love the design and the Huff image is a nice touch.
I'll be curious to see if Diana Brown and Taylor Kuper return. The spring season will be very telling about the roster in terms of who is returning and who has recovered from injuries. Hopefully, we will not see any players enter the transfer portal.

Pretty sure D. Brown is returning. Kuper is a maybe but would love to see her come back. This is a big senior class: Seniors Diana Brown 6'0" S Kennedy Collins 6'3" Rylee Hinton 6'2" Jessica Nunge 6'2" Kyla Swanson 6'4" Bruna Vrankovic 6'2"
I wonder if any come back for a Covid year? I wonder what the scholie count is

Thanks for this. Looks like Tamas has a lot of recruiting work looking for outside hitters in the next few years.

Quick question on Ellie - she redshirted her frosh year, soph year fall (covid) injured in the spring, Injured her junior year, She will be a senior when she finally takes the court. Will she stay an extra two years (covid/redshirt) to get her masters? How does the scholie work? Does she get an additonal year as a medical redshirt? She would need to apply to the NCAA. It's happened before.

The general rule is that a student has five years to play four. Assuming the Covid year does not count she would have to petition the ncaa for a second redshirt year based upon having missed this year due to injury. It is up to the athletic department to decide how many scholarship years she will be given after four. As of now she has two more years of eligibility with a possible additional redshirt year. She would not petition for the extra redshirt year until she has used up her eligibility. I think. Of course this does not answer your real question of what she and the athletic department are planning.

The News Gazette Sports Talk podcast interviewed Chris Tamas yesterday for about 26 minutes! Check it out: SportsTalk with Scott Beatty. It's worth a listen in its entirely and here are a few items of note: Tamas is looking at replacing Cooney either via the portal or by training someone and he's also looking for another DS/L. He feels pretty good about our other positions. He was asked about the possibility of Kuper returning and he didn't say anything really specific about whether she's hoping to come back. He alluded to having conversations with her but didn't reveal anything concrete. Asked about the downtown hockey arena and the prospect of moving into a new facility, Tamas specifically brought up that he doesn't like the feel of volleyball in Iowa's ice arena because the fans are too far away. Would be okay with a 6000 or 7000 person capacity arena if it's designed such that fans are still close to the action (to me that sounds like Nebraska's Devaney). He likes the atmosphere at Huff and referenced other volleyball arenas recently built with capacity around 3500. *Ohio State's Covelli Center is 3700 capacity and I think that would be a sweet facility to shoot for. Asked about our incoming 2022 class he spoke highly of both Stephenson and Bohm (I don't think he can legally talk about Bianca May since she's a walk-on and those aren't official yet). He mentioned that Bohm is a MB/opposite so I've updated the OP with that cross-listing. Hey hope all is well with jgoodson! You were hooking us up with this podcast link earlier this year and we haven't heard from you in a bit.

Buzzerio (Iowa) is an opposite that entered the transfer portal and would be a great pick up. If Ellis is healthy, I could see Tamas shifting Nunge or Terry to the right side and opening up an OH position for Ellie. I believe Nunge played opposite at Florida State and I've been impressed with Terry when she's played rotations on the right side.
Based on the limited videos I've seen of Stephenson, I'm excited about her potential. As I've said in previous posts, she reminds me of Quade and looks like a true six-rotation player. She has a quick, heavy arm with nice range of shots.
Last weekend during the match broadcast, Tim Ditman (WDWS) said he periodically attends practices and spoke very highly of Bingham. I don't recall the context or why he singled her out, but he thinks she will be very good as she develops. I could see Bingham, Whittington or Collins moved to the right side if necessary.
As several fans have noted, Collins' improvement was a key to our success this season. Last spring, she hit .265 with 1.8 kills per game. This year, she hit .334 with 2.42 kills per game. Let's hope she continues to improve and has a stellar senior season.

Buzzerio would be a great addition, particularly if she plays like she played against us in Iowa City.

I would love to pick Coach Tamas brain and see why he moved Collins to OPP and put Whittington in the MB for the NEB match. Was Bruna that unfit to play? Collins was such a huge part of the offense this year. I love to hear what coaches consider when weighing their options in a line-up.

It would not have made much difference where Tamas positioned Whittington and Collins. Losing Cooney for the Nebraska match was the death knell for Illinois. Megan Cooney was too important of a player for Illinois to lose. The winning margin was slim for Illinois vs. a stacked/stocked Nebraska team. Illinois did about what could be expected without one of their top 2 all-around players.

Collins was such a huge part of the offense this year. I love to hear what coaches consider when weighing their options in a line-up. I didn't see Bruna on the bench during either of the first two rounds (West Virginia and Kentucky) and didn't hear a reason for the absence- I assumed it was illness. The orientation of the camera and benches at Texas's gym doesn't show the benches during play so I didn't get a good look at ours, but I don't recall seeing Bruna there in any of the images. I believe if she had been there, we wouldn't have moved Kennedy at all. We were able to get away with having basically no available pin depth on the bench for a good chunk of the season (before Bruna was healthy) but it failed us in the Sweet Sixteen. Watching pregame warmups throughout the season is the closest thing I've got to a window into practices and I think the only non-pin hitter on the roster that took pregame swings as an opposite was Mosher. Didn't see any middles take swings at opposite.

Didn't see any middles take swings at opposite. My opinion on Mosher is that she is a stud. I liken her to Ohio State's coach Jen Flynn (Oldenburg) when she was a setter for OSU but also switched to OH when a new All-American setter joined the OSU team. It will be interesting to see what the Illinois coaches do next season if Brown returns. My opinion is that Brown is a very competent B1G setter. My opinion is that she blocks and digs about as well as any setter in the B1G. Coach Tamas, a setter himself, knows which of the two setters sets the best ball. I wonder sometimes if the individual team members know which setter is a better setter. Over my time watching the setter battles at Illinois, I have often not agreed with initial coaching decisions about who should been setting for the Illini. What do I really know about the team dynamics that exist. I thought Erin Virtue should have been the starting setter when she was a freshman (she was not). I thought Jordyn Poulter was clearly the choice for setter when she arrived as a freshman on campus (not the coach's decision). Coach Hambly was very torn about replacing the senior setter with freshman Poulter. I have been told that there are a lot of considerations when a coach chooses a setter. Some of which are not evident to those not involved in the team dynamic, and not at practice every day. I guess it can be an embarassment of riches for a team to have two very competent setters. The wrong choice by the coach can be devastating to the ultimate success of the team.

Although I agree with you that without Cooney our chances were greatly diminished, I would still like to hear the coaching decision behind this. If indeed Bruna wasnt even in attendance then we know it was basically the only option. Also, Raina had a terrible match and hit negative . We needed another Kentucky level match out of jher and got the farthest thing from.
