During pregame warmups this season where she was set on the pin by Diana or Bruder, I think Brooke took only right-handed swings. But when she sets she's got a legit left-handed spike that she breaks out. Those lefty rips look more like a natural lefty (think Micha Hancock or Mica Allison) than it does the kinda sweeping left-handed attacks we see out of D Brown, or Hayley Bush, etc.

Watching Retke play the national championship match and gotta love her energy & fire. To think we didn’t recruit her because she wasn’t a “fit” for the culture. Can only imagine a Poulter /Retke combo with Ali as our other MB - wow!! Hopefully we will get to see it in 2024 in France.

When I saw Rettke as a sophomore in HS, I thought she’d redshirt her 1st year of college, but she put in a ton of work before entering college to not only play, but to start.

All of her interviews during the tourney she has never taken any credit. All she talks about is her love of her teammates and how hard they work. Very sincere and humble.

Agreed, but two things you cant coach are height and passion. Ill take a 6’8” player with that much fire and drive any day.

I believe that was the year of our vanishing class - Deberg, Omazic, VanDyke, O'Brien. Deberg, Omazic and VanDyke were all higher rated than Cooney. O'Brien was from Illinois. At that time and for several years following there were questions on this board why Illinois was not getting Chicago recruits after Hambly had recruited Birks, Viliunas, who were recruited right after the 2d place finish. There were a number of DSs recruited from northern Illinois, but no scholarship players. I had not heard Rettke was not recruited because she did not "fit the culture." I suppose we will never find out why he stopped recruiting northern Illinois, but I still wonder why. It was painful watching Rettke, Barnes and Loberg tonight.

Back to Mosher vs. Brown for next year's setter. It would seem as blockers continue to get taller and taller, that whichever setter can set the faster offense should have the advantage. The caveat here is that a team has to have a good first pass up to the setter to negotiate a quick offense. Illinois has not had that the last couple of years.

To my eye this past season, I didn't feel like D Brown was really among the things holding us back from reaching the next level. I mean, she set this team to a surprise Sweet Sixteen berth, dishing out a season high 53 and 52 assists in the respective first two rounds, each in four sets. And who knows what we could've done against Nebraska with Cooney in the lineup- the team was playing its best volleyball right before she went out. I think she's got good block timing, floor defense, reactions and quickness to track down errant first contacts, and pretty reliable set location. The marked improvement we saw in her connections with Kyla and Kennedy was a real boon to our offense- I'd think with more time to work on it this offseason our middle attack could be even better next year.
I truly don't know enough about setting to project who might be the better setter for us in 2022, based entirely on comparing D's work and Brooke's pregame warmup setting. I doubt anyone outside of the practice gym could really make an informed comparison. The ball does look different coming out of their hands- for whatever that observation's worth. What I can say is that we're lucky heading into next year to have a proven veteran setter on the roster and a promising, athletic redshirt freshman setter hungry to compete and see the court, herself. I hope we can get a glimpse of that competition in some inter-squad scrimmaging with other local teams. Fingers crossed for another couple spring Purdue matches a la 2019.

It’s ironic, because she was being actively recruited by Illini Basketball during that time. She was a legit top 20 hoops recruit as a 9th & 10th grader, but in volleyball you would have had to have a vision to make her a priority.

I feel like Hambly would have played Rettke at OPP to turn her into Liz McMahon 2.0, so maybe she wouldn’t have seen the same success that she saw at Wisconsin?

Rettke lost interest in basketball after visiting Illinois due to the physicality of B1G and decided to focus on volleyball after that. Wisconsin jumped on recruiting her right then.
