I think unfortunately the admin has decided it’s worth the bad press to avoid the buyout. I just hope no new players are tricked into committing while he’s still there for a few more years.

One wonders why Indiana is so committed to a project that's obviously failed, is getting worse, and is also publicly embarrassing in multiple ways. Probably the $375k buyout.

Three years of buyout money seems like a lot, but paying it while continuing to dig a deeper hole and not improving anything seems like a lot more.

Okay, I read the article, and I have two main takeaways:
1. This is outstanding reporting, especially for a student newspaper. I almost didn't even believe this was a student-run publication. 2. This is incredibly damning for Aird, and I don't see how he survives. It's one thing if you're Bobby Knight, and even he got fired eventually.
Actually, I have a third takeaway, which is that it seems that Indiana itself didn't handle this situation with the appropriate seriousness, and it's hard to figure out why. It's not like buying out Scott Frost at Nebraska, where he has a prohibitive buyout. Getting rid of Aird wouldn't be that expensive (according to the same report, they would owe him half his base salary of $256,000 for the remaining three years on his contract or $384,000 total). They don't even need to fire him for cause per se. They can just fire him due to his poor record and the number of players leaving the program. Granted, for a non-revenue sport, that would be a pretty expensive buyout, but I think it's less expensive than the damage that he's caused and likely will cause until the end of his contract.

"At Maryland, Alden said the players were often limited in what they could order at restaurants. Alden also said players would be weighed by the team three to five times a day during the preseason. Myers said she was told it was to see how much water weight they had lost during practice, but she thought it was unhealthy."
This quote. Especially since Myers has publicly discussed her issues with an ED.

, but I think it's less expensive than the damage that he's caused and likely will cause until the end of his contract. Especially if a group of players would decide to sue the university for their negligence in handling this. The legal fees would be a huge expense; the $370K is a cheap way out. I also keep wondering why he was hired at Indians in the first place. I can’t imagine this behavior started overnight.

is there nobody who could be a servable substitute (evidently, a low bar, because Aird, rightly or wrongly, is going to have a heck of a time recruiting for the forseeable future) for the remainder of his term and willing to work for, say, $200K per year? The savings in salary would cut the cost of the buyout in half.

It's unfortunate that the players quoted chose to remain anonymous.
But that's entirely too much smoke for there not to be fire.
Not a good look for Bobby Knight U.

I hope Vansant and Gwitt are forthcoming as this continues. That can’t be complacent about this.

I think it's understandable why the Indiana players didn't want to go on the record, but the report did have some Maryland players who went on the record.

It is pretty simple to figure out who the "sweet potato' player is; there's a TikTok. Played at Munciana, was ranked #460 nationally in MaxPreps. A legit B1G level player.
