I wonder why they didn't try and speak to any current players. Did you read the first paragraph? The retaliation and punishment current players would receive would be horrendous. People are scared of him and he will make your life a living hell if you're still at practice. Many of them wanted to talk but felt they would be safer waiting until they left to share their story. Yeah, and honestly, as a former reporter myself, I think the exposé has plenty of details just from the sources that they did talk to. Quoting current players doesn't seem necessary to report this story, and it could end up jeopardizing the players, so I could see the reporter deciding it wasn't worth it.

I wonder why they didn't try and speak to any current players. Gotta go through SIDs to reach current athletes, which would entail telling the SID about the story you’re doing. Edit: And, as everyone else has said, obviously too much risk for players still there. If the SID was on volleytalk, they'd have known months ago there was an article coming. We certainly did.

If you're quoting someone anonymously for something like this, you would not inform the SID. That would be insane.

What did I just read?! Good: Tremendous student reporting! The Bad and Very Ugly: Aird! He needs to be walked out today. IU should take the financial hit now, pay the buyout, and start anew. If the routine verbal, physical and mental abuse weren’t enough, asking to see your athlete’s tattoo when you know it’s on her butt cheek should be grounds for some sort of disciplinary action. He’s a Teflon Don at Indiana. As for the new assistants… They got the sales pitch. Aird hired people behind whose integrity and reputation he can be shielded. They believe they can make changes, if what they’ve heard is true. Positioning themselves for HC opportunity after Aird is terminated? C’mon, IU. Do better for your student-athletes! Yeah, that's true. The tattoo incident alone would be grounds for discipline. That happened at Maryland.

Yes. As I said above, the piece details who they tried to talk to, even if those people wouldn't speak with the newspaper. Unless I misread it, they didn't try to talk with the current roster. Perhaps there's some standing policy between the student newspaper and the athletic department about interviews with current athletes or something. I just found it odd. It’s also possible he did talk to current players for background information and intentionally didn’t disclose that as to not give Aird ammunition.

He could have talked to players off the record (to help with other leads) or on background. The more I think about this, the more I think that whether I had talked to current players or not, I would not indicate that I had in the article to protect them from potential retaliation.

Depends on how much you’re willing to upset the relationship dynamic between SIDs and the student paper. Most SIDs already hated us. Of course, this is a serious enough issue that I commend all the reporting IDS did.

Of course, this is a serious enough issue that I commend all the reporting IDS did. Yeah, I mean, I always ran interviews through the SID, but I was never reporting something like this. Edit: Also, I had a great relationship with the women's volleyball SID and really, the whole team. So the idea of an SID hating me seems pretty weird. But I also think it's because I was covering a sport that didn't get as much attention. I think the football SIDs may have been a bit harder to work with.

Maybe I just missed it but I found it odd that there was lots of love from both sides when Vansant left and then crickets when Gwitt left too.

Is anyone going to say anything about the investigation by the school that cleared Aired? Those things now a days are very detailed investigations and not taken lightly. Not all this adds up.
