It was just posted in another thread that IU is losing its 2nd assistant coach - this one to Penn State. Vansant to Illinois, Gwitt to Penn State, Aird to...? I mean both are going to bigger programs so I’m not really sure if we should draw any conclusions from it about Aird or the status of his program, just taking the next step in their careers…Gwitt’s also a Penn State alum so this must mean a lot for him if it’s true

All of the terrible things I assume about the state of the program are completely independent of these two coaching moves.

Unfortunately the PSU athletics website only has MVB rosters post-'07 so no idea what he was like as a player. Does anyone know how he is as a coach?

It's what asst. coaches do unless they find a program, a head coach, and players that make them feel like they are building something bigger together and want to stay to see how they can contribute....

The Aird era with continue at IU unless the administration gets fed up with poor results vs amount of salary paid. Aird reportedly is making $580K per year. With that rather hefty salary I don't see Aird leaving until he is asked to leave (fired), or his contract ends and it is not renewed.

It’s also what assistants do when they’re looking for job security.

They can get fired by their head coach, and get fired when the head coach gets fired, a double whammy.

Here's a link to a publication listing his salary, but it is only one source: www.heraldtimesonline.com/story/news/2020/02/22/what-top-iu-officials-are-really-paid/43877711/Like you, I feel like that salary is way too high. But if it is anywhere close to accurate, you can see why Aird left Maryland and why he would stick around until asked to leave.

Yeah that was what he was paid in his first year though…a lot of times coaches make a lot more than their actual salary on paper in their first year only because a buyout from their previous contract is involved…..his annual salary being reported on public record since then has been in that 240k range…it’s still a high number and I’m sure they expect results….what’s actually interesting about the salary situation with IU is that the whole staff is getting paid top dollar….assistants, DOVO, technical coordinator so overall the salary for the whole staff means that the school is serious about getting that program up there

Well anyone can get fired, I’m of course talking about the head coach being in a secure position.
