Indiana didn't really care about volleyball for the previous 25 years (how long they kept the last two, fairly unsuccessful coaches). Aird is the only coach at Indiana who's been there with competitive facilities, resources, etc. But the question is which came first? Caring about volleyball or success? Purdue hired a high school coach who came in and built it into one of the best programs in the country. There’s a decent chance that was dumb luck. Didn't Pacific hire a high school coach who came in and won them two NCAA titles? Maybe hiring the right high school coach is not just dumb luck.

Why do people always bring this up? Volleyball was not even a full time job when Dunning got hired.

Aird will be monitored 24/7 this coming season by players, administrators and public.....this will not be a good experience for anybody.

Ball State also hired a high school coach that turned the program immediately around after 5 consecutive BSU losing seasons. The Cardinals are now a power in both men’s and women’s volleyball. It’s a shame both Indiana and Purdue do not sponsor men’s volleyball now that Indiana has sanctioned boy’s volleyball. The same is true with Wisconsin, Illinois and Northwestern, as Illinois and Wisconsin both sanction boy’s volleyball. There are many outstanding players in these states. Ball State went to the Final Four and nearly swept national champion Hawaii! Steve Aird could possibly be a solid men’s coach at Indiana after playing collegiately at Penn State.

Indiana has shown interest in VB and it can be measured in the dollars spent on the facilities and Aird's salary. The fact that they haven't gotten a good return on that yet is something that a good coach can change. Aird has turned out to not be that guy. The administration is at a point today where they can show interest in VB again by choosing something more important than money, by getting in and cleaning up a polluted program. How they handle that choice shows how interested in VB they truly are.

Indiana has an administration that tolerates coaches who abuse their players, apparently. Indiana didn't really care about volleyball for the previous 25 years (how long they kept the last two, fairly unsuccessful coaches). Aird is the only coach at Indiana who's been there with competitive facilities, resources, etc. See, I'm not 100% sure that I buy that Indiana really cares about volleyball at this point. Sure, they spent some more money on a coach who turned out to be a bad hire and on upgraded facilities. But they also are clearly keeping a failing coach because they don't want to pay a $384,000 buyout. And as long as that failing coach is still around, there is almost no chance that the program will significantly improve. In fact, it will likely continue to crater until he's gone. When I see something like that in any sport, I conclude that the program is cheap and isn't as committed to being successful as it needs to be.

Purdue is actually one of the reasons I'm not that optimistic about Indiana. There are a lot of good to great competitor programs in that area. Not only is Indiana the fourth-best program in its own state, there are lots of other great programs in neighboring or nearby states that compete for recruits. And Purdue is probably the best program that hasn't been to the Final Four. The idea that Indiana should be just as good as Purdue is laughable in my view. Where was Purdue when Dave got there? What does Purdue have that IU doesn’t also have if not better? Outside of their program performing better, give one tangible reason Indian couldn’t be as good? One. Well, Purdue was actually a pretty successful program in the 1980s with five Sweet 16 appearances. That may not sound like much, but again, Indiana has made the tournament five times in its entire history. So while Purdue was bad in the 1990s, it wasn't like they had no history of success. Also, you're kind of acting like all that success that Shondell has had in the past two decades doesn't matter, but it does. A lot. When he retires, the program will be much more attractive than it was when he took over and much more attractive than Indiana is now. And the landscape has changed in the last 20 years, as a lot of programs in the Midwest have improved significantly in that time. Perhaps if Indiana had the foresight to hire Shondell in the early 2000s, then they would be what Purdue is now. But they didn't, and now they're 20 years even further behind. And being too cheap to buy out the failing Aird certainly won't help.

I have to imagine (a) isn’t the reason, he’s failed in every measurable way, let alone what athletes are saying. What’s to buy?At this point they are ina pickle, if they fire him it’s an acknowledgment that what he was doing was harmful to student athletes, which is a full admission that they failed to act properly or swiftly or that they didn’t do a proper investigation. It’s damned if they do or don’t at this point. Just my opinion

Screamed at - at times, Belittled - highly doubt it. Not my experience. Was that your experience? I just described the experience Sorry you were belittled by your Munciana coaches. In my 5 years I never saw or heard of it but I wasn’t there 24/7 so it’s possible. Sorry again, no one should have to play for a coach like that.

Did the new assistant coaches start yet? At least one of them I believe has. I think the other one was a men's coach?

In the press release announcing his termination, they can talk about how they are committed to making Indiana a winning program, as evidenced by the money they've spent recently. And as part of that commitment, they now have a higher standard and expectation for winning that Aird has just not met. But then they'd have to pay the buyout.

They really don’t turn down more than doubling their salary in the same region “all the time”. Indiana is not a good job, even if it means doubling your salary. If the only argument you have is about money, I won't waste any more of time responding. Ever been to their new facility? If anyone thinks that IU could not be a way better job than Purdue (ever been to the %*$#hole they still play in, even with all of their success?) with the right Coach, you are absolutely wrong. They obviously thought that Aird could become the Dave Shondell of IU, but happened to get that dead wrong. IU could quickly become one of the better jobs in the Big 10 but for one little detail - finding the right Coach. Someone like a Kelli Miller, if she could be attracted to the job, could be (IMHO) that person, but we will never know until they dump Aird and go in a different direction.

If Purdue is an elite program, there is absolutely nothing stopping Indiana from being just as good.

If Purdue is an elite program, there is absolutely nothing stopping Indiana from being just as good. Exactly....IU can be just as desirable as Purdue or even more so down the road (a very long road btw). Clearly nowhere near there yet, but the factors that currently limit them are no history of success and the no reason to believe that they will have future success. Other than that (lol) they have lots to offer. Would love to see another team in our region get things turned around.
