Sideout percentage (or maybe NOT sideout percentages) for the each server are much more important than aces or errors. I have no doubt the coaches know them in great detail.
And it wouldn't be difficult to compile them just from the 'play-by-play' in the box scores. Just tedious to do so.
The minute I wrote that, I knew I'd end up doing it, sooner or later. So today I figured the sooner the better. Counted up "by hand", input into the spreadsheet by hand, so there could *certainly* be mistakes and typos. FWIW.
The numbers given are the sideout percents: that is, how often the server lost their serve, how often the opponent won the point and took away UW's serve. So from our point-of-view, the lower number, the better.
Izzy: 122 total serves, .508
Orzol: 104 total serves, .587
GG: 128 total serves, .422
MJ: 115 total serves, .504
Franklin: 51 total serves, .588
CC: 88 total serves, .557
Liz G: 39 total serves .590
Demps: 16 total serves, .188
AnnaMac: 6 total serves, .667
Reed: 8 total serves, .125
Those are generally quite good. But some of that is due to the High Point, Campbell, and Rhode Island matches. So, if I take those matches out:
Izzy: 84 total serves, .560
Orzol: 69 total serves, .667
GG: 77 total serves, .519
MJ: 85 total serves, .506
Franklin: 31 total serves, .710
CC: 70 total serves, .571
Liz G: 23 total serves .739
Demps: 16 total serves, .188
AnnaMac: 1 total serve, 1.000
Reed: no serves attempted
Maybe surprising, MJ has been the most effective server against the 'quality' opponents, and her rate so far is unaffected by the quality of the opponent. Relatively small sample sizes at this point, however
Demps should be serving more often! :-)
(One thought as to why she might not: if she subs in to serve, she's locked into that spot in the rotation for the rest of the set. That is, serve in place of Franklin, and she can only then replace Franklin. In not having her sub in to serve, Sheffield is keeping his options open for whom she subs in for, if someone is having an off set/night, or if the sub count gets low and 'plan B' of Demps being a six rotation opposite has to happen.)
