Izzy had a couple rough periods where her location was just off. She needs more reps. They both do. Interesting that Sheff brought the two setters out for special praise after the match. Probably a good move. Interesting that the two setters are the two best servers so far. Izzy has really caught up again. Would be interesting to... on second thought, I'm not going to finish that sentence, because it seems like rob will spend hours doing whatever data manipulation I say because he can't help himself.

Why is Demps such a bad blocker compared to other players her size? It’s really something I don’t understand. . She does offer up several opportunities for opposing teams to challenge a net violation and burn a challenge, so that's helpful! (twice so far, both super obvious it was just hair) Keep that up Demps!

I was wondering if we'd get to see more of Wrobel as the match progressed. Demps just doesn't seem to fit the right side in a 6-2. Somehow, she has to get up quicker on her blocking. The demps/crawford/orzol front line is certainly small by badger standards. I give my mvp to floor towel guy against IL. He put in a week's worth of work in one afternoon. My guess is that we will begin to see Wrobel more and more as the season wears on. In attack, a lot of Demps' problems had to do with the setting, I think. Especially later in the match. The blocking though, that is something that should have been fixed by now. Girl is a proper athlete. No reason she should not do that really well by now.

They won a tough match, I just finished watching. Too much negativity on these threads for my mood right now Setting was inconsistent, yes, but a lot of middle and RS kills, so passing and setting was good at times. I need to put dark tape in my laptop bag and put tape on the video player bar so I don't see the time left in the recording, that is very nerve wracking. I thought it might go five but wasn't sure, but UW's fairly quick closeout of set 4 and IL making short rallies with tons of errors made for a quick ending.

But, i think she has trended toward a utility player more because she doesn't block well, as opposed to, she doesn't block well because she has been pressed into utility duty. It was tough seeing her mircotip those balls, that were heading out, when she was still clearly on the way up. Hopefully, they can figure it out.

Honestly, blocking-wise it's pretty stiff competition. All our middles block well including Devyn and Anna on the right (well, Smrek is only an okay blocker for her size, but when she doesn't have to move laterally she's an intimidating wall), and then you have Franklin (pretty good) and Orzol (excellent for her size) on the left. So to not block as well as them is not the same as not blocking well. It is, however, something (along with passing) that keeps Demps from being a major option as a starter. That being said, her versatility to play back row means that she's the best "6 rotation opposite" on the team (though Wrobel also seems to be an option here). This team in its best form needs her to be available late in sets when we run low on subs.

She has 0 blocks in three sets against Penn State. 3 against Illinois with a freshman OH going off against her.

How much of that has been while "playing RS" would take some digging. Some of those sets were when she subbed in at the left side, and a couple of them were with her in the back row. Many were set when she did not play "full time".

I would add that she had 3 blocks as starting sub for Smrek against Illinois. That's more than 0.67/set. Now to what degree that was down to the middles is a different question. I think she should be better on the block. I don't think is destined not to be better.

Man, volleyball's statistical system needs to be Moneyballed. Blocks per set is a terrible statistic for players who aren't playing full time. A simple stat like "blocks per opposing team attempts" would be much better, and if the statistics taken were good enough then "blocks per block attempt" would be even better. Saying Demps has a bad blocks per set is like saying a bench player in basketball is a bad scorer because the number of points they score per game is less than the starter. She's subbed in late in many sets - of course she's not going to get a lot of blocks during those sets.

This might be way out there, but at least while Smrek is out, would they over run Franklin as a right side and put Demps or Wrobel in as a left? Franklin’s game has been solid since Florida and she’s passing and hitting well, but she’s also a couple inches taller and had at least one noticeable block on the right side before they switched during the Illinois match. Demps has some intangibles that have brought out some solid play from her (Marquette, Florida) where she’s got a decent serve and can hit a variety of shots, but doesn’t pose as much of a threat as a blocker. Not sure if they’d go that route at least til Smrek can come back in.

Sitting watching warmups Friday night with no Smrek, that idea ran through my mind, and had that happened Friday night, I wouldn't have been very surprised. But once it didn't happen Friday, I doubt it will; *maybe* after another weekend when Bramschreiber becomes available. Because putting Franklin on the right side means she subs out as part of the 6-2 sub pattern, and means Demps/Wrobel has to play backrow and serve-receive etc. With Bramschreiber available, she could be the backrow sub for left side Demps/Wrobel. But we don't get her for another two matches. If Smrek is still out then and the lack of right-side block is a problem, the idea might get re-consideration.

But if the offense is forced to go through the left on OOS balls, how much does UW lose by having Demps instead of Franklin there for 3 rotations? Would be interesting to find out.
