Nothing makes my eye roll back farther in my head than debates about grunting. If it works for a player, let em have at it.

Anyway, yes, the Badgers have been really inconsistent this year. People do tend to be like, why are they doing _______? Then, it works, and yeah, because of that! I hope they can be more consistently good, but there is a lot of talent here, and they found a way to pull out the third set and overcome Good Kash, although the block that made it 21-20 in the third on her was huge!

Observations: -Izzy was throwing darts from the service line. Up until tonight that weapon has been surprisingly limited. -Kash was impressive. Although, getting her into the backrow let the badgers hang on in set 3. -Glad the servicing sub was shelved during the 3rd set so subs were still available for the badgers when the set went long. -Points and stops were hard to come by when demps, crawford and orzol comprised the front row. They need what Smrek can bring there. She would have at least given Kash a little more to think about. -GG started out really well. Life is so much easier with a solid first pass. -Life is also easier when the serves are staying in. Would have made a difference against MN. -So many missed opportunities on freeballs is maddening.

Hammill was just not nearly as effective this match. But was it the serve they were facing during Hammill's rotations? or the hitters she was feeding? I noticed that Hammill set Demps as RS, whereas Ashburn had Robinson.

Looking at the stats thus far, I have to wonder if Smrek is going to get “Wally Pipp’ed” out of the lineup for a while? Her efficiency is pretty awful, and she’s only 4th in blocks.

No, there is no way Smrek gets left out. While she may have not had the greatest start to the year, her potential and ceiling is the highest, we have all seen what she can do. With better passing, setting (big one here) and with a bit more confidence she will find her groove surely. Badgers will have to find a way to keep her dynamic and hitting from the middle as well as RS to really use her as they should be. And that’s only on offense. Blocking she leads the team in positive touches as quoted on BTN the other night, and her mere presence for an opposing OH already changes the dynamic of the opponents offense. Just my opinion and food for though 😊

Agree. On block size alone she will be back.

I was wondering if we'd get to see more of Wrobel as the match progressed. Demps just doesn't seem to fit the right side in a 6-2. Somehow, she has to get up quicker on her blocking. The demps/crawford/orzol front line is certainly small by badger standards.
I give my mvp to floor towel guy against IL. He put in a week's worth of work in one afternoon.

Why is Demps such a bad blocker compared to other players her size? It’s really something I don’t understand.
