I always take those VM stats with a grain of salt. Sheffield was clearly coaching the passers to pass to a target that would have them averaging a 2 or 2.1 when the season started. As long as the BR attack was an option, that still meant they had three options as far as he was concerned. He was much more worried about overpasses than getting passes to the net because they had no way to defend them. In his pressers an in game comments, he really harped on those.
Still, the badgers were not passing that well at all the last two matches. They got really tight when it mattered against good competition in a knockout tournament. The short arming on the aces really bugged me. GG scoots across the floor on defense and gets her hand to a ton of balls, but maybe needs to reign in that energy when she is passing.
Still they beat one good team and then barely lost to the other really good team playing almost as poorly as they did at any time in the B1G season. IF they can get the passing stabilized and keep improving the setting they will be a real handful next year.

I'm just coming back to this thread to say THANKS Badgers and Badger fans. Great season (mostly) until the last weekend...and considering everything, I think the 2022 exceeded expectations!
Except that expectations get bigger the more you exceed them, and then they might bite you. So, I'm sad the Badgers aren't playing in Omaha.
But thanks for the flashes of brilliance this season, and my road trips were rewarded with victories, too.
Pitt Coach Dan Fisher said there's no doubt Madison is a "volleyball town," so keep doing your jobs, Badger fans!

I dont give a frogs fat azz what Dan Fisher says, lol. Im depressed and Im ticked we arent playing in the Final Four. That wasnt Badger volleyball this weekend thats what makes it worse. Hopefully we get at least two portal gets this week and or next week. That would help lift my spirits some for how this season ended.

Ask Santa for a "back-to-back-to-back-to-back" T-shirt for Christmas. That should make you feel better.

You do realize that being in the final four 3 straight times is an amazing feat. That doesn't happen for any team very often. It's the definition of a big team. Before that streak we lost to the illini in the four sets in the final 8, and guess what, it was passing that did us in. The next year it was a runner up, then a semifinal and then a national championship. The only thing that really changed was Barnes coming in 2019, and, guess what, she had real trouble passing her first year. If you really want to know disappointment you should have been there in 2007, 2014, or in 2016. Now those hurt. This is barely a scratch.

My take is, I felt like this team wasn't going to win a National Championship at the beginning of the tournament, and the reason why was exactly what happened - I just didn't think we could pass well against elite competition in the later half of the tournament. Part of why we won the B1G so easily is that the good serving teams weren't the good teams - last year's tournament version of Nebraska would have beaten us easily, and I think we would have been in huge trouble vs Texas and Stanford's serves.
So I'm not disappointed per se by the Pitt loss - I really felt Pitt earned it and wish them well in Omaha. But man, it would have been a real feather in our cap to keep the final four streak going and that's what hurts the most from a program standpoint.

Let's give Pitt some credit for their win. The Badgers outperformed the Panthers in most of the categories you see in box scores. The big thing was serve-pass. Even our toughest serves were getting picked up, oftentimes with difficulty, but passed right on top of the setters' heads. Beyond that, Pitt's block coverage was CRAZY-good. Against other teams, we have another 20-block night.
At the outset of the season, I told myself I'd be happy with top 4 in the B1G. I also took the regional weekend off in anticipation of needing to travel. Mind you, I am no one to expect anything, but they well-exceeded my hopes for this team. Win or lose, I saw this team really gel together and play for each other. They'll keep getting better and I will be more than happy to cheer myself hoarse at the Field House.
Thanks to the Badgers for another amazing season!

I know. Im spoiled now. Im spoiled, stubborn and like Dan Hart says, "im addicted", ha. I want that national title every year for these girls. UW women's hockey coach Mark Johnson - who knows something about winning tournaments and championships - says winning the conference championship is harder than winning a national championship; because you have play at a championship level for a much longer period of time. Winning the national tournament takes getting hot for a couple weeks, but winning the conference takes months. (Yes, the women's hockey tournament is only three games - and now maybe four - not six. But the idea remains.)

Sheffield’s passing grades were fine when your setter is Carlini or Hilley, but they do not work when you have average setters. VM grades def more accurate.

Actually that was Badger volleyball this past weekend. Inconsistent passing was the name of the game this season. That match was much like the NC in 2021. Pitt scored two more points than WI. 2.
The season met expectations, if we are being fair. However, they well exceeded as I didn't expect a Big Ten Championship. I thought Nebraska or Minnesota had the honors there. Badgers are going to end up being the 5-6 best team in the country in 2022. I vote for 5th.
That doesn't make the season-ending loss any easier. It takes me about two weeks to recover, if not more.
I get the sense there is some sense of embarassment losing to Pitt. There shouldn't be! We should all be rooting for them to win the NC.
Gregorski wants to play beach. I hope she gets the chance! She has Badgers that went into the beach game to help her out.

In August, I emailed my niece and her husband that I though whichever of UW, Nebraska and Minn sorted out their setter situation(s) best would win the B1G. Glad it was us, obviously. Yay Izzy and MJ!
