Went to the Scarlet vs Gray game and here are my takeaways. Sets 1, 3, and 4 were a mix of starters and reserves on each side and close sets (28-26, 25-20, 25-21). Set 2 was the starters vs reserves. Starters: S: Podraza L: Murr Opp: Londot OH: Gonzalez, Grunze MB: Rader, Powell DS for Grunze: Taylor The starters rolled to a 25-9 win and the gap felt as big as the score. Thoughts on individual players: - Freshman DS McClure had a nice left-handed serve and she was digging/passing as co 2nd best DS on team with Taylor, behind Murr.
- Podraza changed her serve away from that ridiculous high ball serve and was getting most of them in and in good spots.
- Freshman OH Thorpe struggled for the first 2 sets, but really started to play well in the final 2 sets and has a nice arm.
- OSU will struggle in serve receive when their OH2 (Grunze, Moore or Thorpe) is in the front row and in the passing pattern. Moore passed better than the other 2 and I think had the better swings tonight, but I expect J-FO to start Grunze on Friday and she struggled when targeted in serve, especially in the last 2 sets.
- Although she is listed as an OH on the roster Adria Powell appears to be the second starting MB. She had her best set when she was with Mac setting her in the second, but also had some good swings with White setting her in the final 2 sets. Freshman MB Ragler looked better tonight than MacNeill who seemed to be a step slow several times
- Londot struggled in the first set missing several shots just off lines, but she started keeping them in and was effective the rest of the night. She will need to hit better most nights for this team to compete for the conference title.

Not so sweet 16 really like this video of Podraza she seems to really relish the role as a team leader. Buckeye fans correct me if I am wrong she said they have been taking the program to new heights. Assuming that Podraza is referring to their record ranking in AVCA last year couldn't think of anything else cause if I remember correctly the Taylors, Sandbothe and former setter, took them to the sweet 16 a couple years running into Wisconsin and losing both times. Could be their year to shake this round and make a leap to the next.

Hey look... there's Nut volleyball on Friday! Guess it's time to come out of hibernation On FS1, it seems. Going to try to multitask Nuts on tv and Badger streaming. I actually don't dislike Texas, but I hope the Buckeyes win at least one match.

17 hours away. Are either the Friday or Saturday matches against Texas sold out? Saturday is sold out. They save the one endline for the students, so it might not be a full house, but you cannot buy a ticket for Saturday. Friday still has a decent number of seats in the corners, but will still be a good crowd.

Obviously Texas is a very good team, especially offensively, but that didn't look like an OSU team under J-Fo the last few years. The strength of her teams have been their defense, especially digging balls that looked like kills. Murr didn't seem to really get anything tonight and lacked her normal enthusiasm after making a big play that normally feeds the team.

I do agree with you but as you already pointed out, given how good they are offensively, I do believe we did enough defensively to put ourselves in a situation to win…I just really think it comes down to putting the ball away and winning a shootout against a team like Texas and we simply don’t have the firepower to do it

Rooting for OSU but the serving last night needs to improve. Too many missed serves into the net and easily returnable balls. If they can tighten that up it’ll be a different match tonight.

This is true and I feel like the defense and passing will pick up with last night probably being an anomaly. That being said, Ohio State had a glaring weakness these past few seasons with the absence of an athletic, terminal pin hitter and didn’t do anything in the portal or on the recruiting front to fix that. You can already see that’s going to cost them just as it has in the last 2 seasons which is disappointing.

Ohio State looked good last night. Yes, there are always some things to improve but as an outsider the level of play for the first game of the year was really really high compared to the other D1 first games. I think tOSU is going to be tough this year and I look forward to seeing them develop as the season goes on. Texas is on a whole other level with their All-Star team so I wouldn't worry too much about losing a game or two to them. These games will push them and they'll come out tougher on the other side.
