One more question while I’m trying to learn on Christmas Day: Are any of the European (or Asian or South American) leagues organized across borders? (Like Toronto is in the MLB). And if pro ball gets organized in the U.S. again for another try, will it look like a European league model?

They do play in events like club world championship or champions league and stuff like that but not in regular play.

Why is there no professional volleyball in the UK? I think they have a sort of semi professional league. I don’t know how it works but they get a lot of students to finish their masters in the UK and play there There’s just little interest for the sport in the Uk and even less funding www.volleyballengland.org/competitions/national_volleyball_league

More questions.
1) Since the NCAA season just finished and it seems the Euro Leagues are midway through their seasons, who are the teams looking to pick up among NCAA people? Replacement players? I mean, I assume the teams already had plans for the season or something like that. Are they offering contracts for next season? Or would they start immediately?
2) Is there a cap on the number of players they can have on a team? Or just a matter of how much the team is willing to pay for all of their players?

Poland and Germany (maybe France) are good landing places for most NCAA players. Italy and Turkey are good for only the best NCAA players. In Italy, teams can only have two players from the same national team; not sure about the other nations' league limits. At this time, the top-tier teams are all stacked, so the mid and lower-tier teams, with money, might still be looking for some help.

Anyone really. Teams across Europe, South America are looking for players (not really in asia). They can be replacements for injury... maybe players aren't playing up to expectation... need depth, etc. These are all for this current season... Some may dabble into next season already, but I'd say that is really rare. (Players that sign in Puerto Rico are starting their season there, they're short) 2. Um... I'm not entirely sure if there is a cap on roster size. kwt might know. My initial guess would be no. I would guess there is a limit on how many players can be registered for competitions (like league play, continental competitions, etc.)

A maximum of 14 players on the game sheet.

There is also MEVZA (Middle European Volleyball Competition) for best teams from Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Hungary and Austria.

The official 'transfer window' in many leagues will be closed on January 31st. As you mentioned, teams are looking for replacements for injured players or additional players who could help the teams in the next months. (The most european leagues end their seasons around May). Of course a lot of depends on team's budget and their goals. Some teams want to hire new players to avoid relegation to lower division. Other teams, need players who could help them fighting for trophies (e.g. league championship)

And if pro ball gets organized in the U.S. again for another try, will it look like a European league model? if it was a perfect world, I would say yes. But I have doubts that that model would be successful here. That's what LOVB's aim is for down the road.

There's not really a "Toronto" in the bigger leagues.. but I would say the closest would probably be Volero.
Volero was based in the Swiss League, in Zurich for awhile. (Foluke played for them) But they didn't feel the Swiss League was good enough competition for them (they'd won like 8 league titles in a row)
They moved to the French League 6? years ago... and are based in Cannes now.

Volero Zürich still exists. They play in LNB (Swiss 2nd division) and they'll be 99.99 % promoted to LNA next season (they're 1st in the standings and they've lost only one set so far). The "French" Volero is based in Le Cannet (a couple of miles north of Cannes).

Given the really incredible input from avid and many others in this thread, I've decided that my easiest route to truly understanding the European leagues is to pick a player and follow her journey.
I'm picking Samedy.
I still have a ton of questions. (Apparently that's become my mantra.)
That said, Bundesliga, here I come.
