Hawaii women's volleyball team clinches share of Big West title on senior nightBy Brian McInnis Nov. 21, 2022, Spectrum News The Hawaii women's volleyball team, seen earlier this season, clinched at least a share of the Big West championship for the third straight season on Sunday night. (Spectrum News/Brian McInnis) Excerpt: The Hawaii women’s volleyball team sent off Mylana Byrd with a going-away present. UH clinched a share of the Big West title on Sunday’s senior night with a 25-13, 25-10, 25-12 rout of Cal State Bakersfield, then honored the team’s backup setter in a traditional ceremony. UH (20-6, 17-1 Big West), with 6,590 tickets issued at SimpliFi Arena, left no doubt against a team it struggled to put away in a five-setter on the road on Oct. 14. It was the third straight season, not including the 2020 campaign that was lost to the pandemic, that UH clinched a least a share of the conference crown. The Rainbow Wahine can clinch the outright conference title in a showdown at UC Santa Barbara (19-9, 15-3) on Friday. The Gauchos are unbeaten at home in 10 matches, but should it be required the Wahine could clinch the title with a win in the regular-season finale Saturday at lowly Cal State Northridge (9-21, 4-14). Middle Amber Igiede, a favorite for Big West Player of the Year, pounded 16 kills on 27 swings without an error, hitting .593. Hitter Riley Wagoner added an 11-kill, 10-dig double-double. Back row specialist Kendra Ham and libero Tayli Ikenaga also had double-digit dig games. Ikenaga surpassed 600 for her career. Byrd saw some of her most extensive action of the season as she split time with starter Kate Lang. Byrd, who transferred from Alabama prior to the 2021 season and has led the Rainbow Wahine’s “B” side in practices, had 10 assists, four digs and a block solo against the Roadrunners. Match thread created ... for Hawaii's pivotal matches against UCSB/CSUN this week ... final stretch! Wahine need to just take care of business and wrap up the AQ (even though their at-large prospects appear to be on the better side of bubble...) volleytalk.proboards.com/post/3207114/thread

Robyn is basically back on track, in bringing the Wahine Team back into the National spotlight. She has basically the whole Wahine Team back for next season, plus 2 outstanding incoming Outside/Opposite Hitters. Not to mention 100% healthy Kennedi Evans (Middle), and Jackie Matias (Setter) coming off a redshirt year. Also, depending on the status of her health issue, there is Anna Kiraly (Middle). The 2 incoming Freshmen will not be pressured to produce right away. Robyn will have the luxury of bringing them along slowly. But watching the talent level of these 2 incoming Freshmen, they will definitely push the returning players for playing time, if not, to be a Starter.
As for 2024, Robyn has 2 committed Middles. She will probably use 1 of the remaining scholarships on a transfer Middle, with some experience. The other 2 remaining scholarships will go to an Outside/Opposite Hitter, and a Setter, who is willing to Redshirt their 1st year, like Matias did this year. As far as the Libero/backrow position goes, not to worried, there are enough of those kinds of players in Hawaii, and on the continent, that Robyn can bring in. Either as Freshmen, or transfers.

As far as the NCAA Tournament goes, Bracketology has the Wahine all over the map. Bracketology has the Wahine Team playing in all 4 Regions, throughout the season. So who knows in what Region the Selection Committee will have the Wahine Team playing in. But one thing I am sure of, would not want to be the team playing the Wahine, in the NCAA Tournament. This Wahine Team could be the Sleeper Team of the NCAA Tournament. This Wahine Team still has not played their Most Complete Match yet. Robyn has brought this Wahine Team along nicely. They are just now starting to Peak, as a team.

Robyn and the staff have proven to be excellent recruiters. The 2021 season felt like such a net-loss because of the COVID departures of Hawaii's top two attackers, Helvig and Rasmussen, followed by losing three 2021 recruits to injury and the transfer portal in Kiraly, Johnson and Leoniak. But if you look at some of the players they brought in since 2019 - Rasmussen, Helvig, Brooke Van Sickle, Bailey Choy, Amber, Riley, Kate, Caylen, Jackie, Tayli, and now Stella, Tali, Madi and Mili - that is "Sweet 16 and above" level talent.

I do wish Anna will be back but she has been out for at least 2 seasons and not only that but she is really not able to perform any type of hard core physical activity. . To hope that she plays volleyball is asking much. I just hope she can resume her life normally as possible and not let her illness affect her life.
The odds are that Anna is probably done with volleyball. Let's all pray for a miracle but let wish for Anna to be in good health for the future first and foremost. Volleyball is not that important in the big picture.

oregon looks on the path to nabbing a seed. while washington seems to be playing their way out of one.
in recent memory, when hawaii isn't sent to washington for the 1st two rounds, they've been sent to oregon (among a few other places to the midwest, like tamu and minnesota).
if hawaii takes care of things this week, i'm guessing they'll be playing in duck country come NCAAs ...
