Slightly curious how long Michigan will allow their volleyball program to languish and underperform in the Big 10, relative to all the other sports on campus. Me too! I think the Rosen's have done about as well as they could given the limited resources provided in comparison to most other athletic programs, especially on the facility front. They make the tournament most years, so its not as if the program is a bad one. But their performance within the conference has long been middle of the pack. Michigan Volleyball has been on cruise control for a while. The roster typically carries one All American supported by a cast of talented, but not elite, support players. It's a family atmosphere and the coaches are extremely loyal to their recruits. Transfers in and out are rare (at least pre-COVID) and the tendency has been to work with what they have rather than try to fill roster holes via transfer or targeted recruitment. This formula results in one or two wins each season against the top of the conference while they beat up on the bottom half and avoid bad losses. This gets them to the tourney, where they will typically bow out at Round 2. It's been a decade since their Final 4 appearance. With their youngest entering college this fall, I wonder how much longer Mark and Leisa will go. When they do turn over the reins, I hope their successor sees appropriate investment in the program so it begins to compete for conference titles.

Or at least a program that a lot of volleyball playing kids would want to be a part of.

Or at least a program that a lot of volleyball playing kids would want to be a part of. It's a very good program and absolutely one that I would recommend to any aspiring athlete. The question is how do we take the next competitive step? I think first and foremost there needs to be a facility investment to keep pace with the rest of the B1G. The Rosen's are outstanding coaches and I didn't mean to come across otherwise. I just think we are approaching a point of transition and I hope it brings new energy and investment. That transition still might be years down the road, and I would love to see a new faclity before the Rosen's retire.

Seriously. What are the chances the Rosen's don't get re-upped come January? 99% if Michigan misses NCAA again. Not counting the 2020 COVID season, they have only missed the tournament once in the previous 15 years so I'm not sure that's the primary metric they will be judged by.

I love the decision to bring the two Jess's to Media Day. Representing the Block M well. Full transcript from their session today here. (Thanks to vergyltantor for the link!)

Notes from today's Maize and Blue Scrimmage at Crisler:
- Pretty decent turnout for what will be the first "normal" season since the pandemic. It was nice to have the regular season match treatment with concessions open, PA announcer, music, the Michigan Storm Trooper and full staffing. They even had the courtside seats set up with open seating; that was a nice touch. - This was a scrimmage for the officiating crew as well with a rotating corps of line judges and alternating R1 and R2. They had their own coaches on hand doing evaluations and providing feedback. It's so important to support and develop officials for our sport. - Yes, there was volleyball played! Four sets with rotating lineups and different combinations of players. I think we saw the likely starters together in Set 4: Johnson (S); Mruzik/Murray(OH); Robinson/Boney (MB); Pertofsky (OPP); Grant (L); Beals (DS) - Of the three newcomers Nyambio impressed the most, but can she find a spot in the lineup? Robinson and Boney both played well today. - Are we back to switching sides in 2022? They did that at the scrimmage today although with the changing rosters each set in hard to tell. - Johnson did not look 100%, playing with a heavily wrapped thigh. But she did stay out for all 4 sets, so she appears to be ready. - I know it's early, but there is not an heir apparent on this roster that looks ready to replace Paige Jones' production. The lineups today lead me to think the coaches are leaning towards Murray over Jacobs, but we'll see. Someone will need to step up offensively otherwise teams are just going to load up on Mruzik all season long. - Leisa Rosen coached the Maize team and Jerome Fraisse led the Blue. Jerome went to the challenge card often while Leisa mostly let them play. It's fun to see how competitive everyone is even within the team. - In the end, this looked like the 2021 team just without Paige Jones. But it's early and the offense will adjust and develop. - The defense looked good on both sides today. Passing will be the critical factor to Michigan's fortunes this year.
Go Maize! Go Blue!

Thanks for the notes!! I really like Michigan. Classy and humble. I figured Jacobs would be favored for her passing over Murray.

What is the probability that someone will post the week 1 match between the Michigan Wolverines and the "Utah Tech" Trailblazers on you tube after its conclusion? I'd really like to watch this particular match, but it's going to be on Espn+.
