What is going on with Stubbe? She has not been playing well lately. She and Maldonado Diaz both didn't have good numbers vs. ASU, while Hodge did. Seems like they never can get 2-3 hitters playing well at the same time. The middles did well though.

Can someone please explain to me why we keep serving right at the damn libero? Can we not serve anywhere other than zone 1?

Another 2024 recruit, 6’0 Setter/Opposite Avery Scoggins. Another 6-2 type setter, which seems to be a pattern with Emery Herman, Ana Heath, and now Avery. I’m not sure where she’s ranked or anything like that. http://instagram.com/p/Ci9_8kEOPFz

Okay looking at the poll votes, 8/11 votes for bottom 4? I don’t see Arizona being worse than Cal, Oregon St, Colorado, and ASU. Utah and Washington St will take significant steps back as well, although maybe not behind Arizona. I know it's early, but the bottom-four consensus looks pretty good.

The program has been spinning it's wheels for a while now. Bottom 4 sounds appropriate. It's tough to be a consistent contender in the Pac but Purdue turned a corner a few years ago. Maybe Rubio can get them there?

My two cents is that AZ has not had a dominant outside hitter since Dahlke. From what I remember(didn’t really start paying attention until 2014), Rubio always built his teams around a really good six rotation outside. They had Kingdon, then Mau, then Dahlke. Whipple was the heir apparent, but ended up not being that great a player. Great teammate, but wasn’t helping the team in any measurable category. Until they find that outside, AZ unfortunately won’t sniff another NCAA tourney.

She really put the team on her back her final year. I keep hoping that Sofia can do it, but I am not sure if she will ever be the kind of 6ro they need. Maybe because she got such a late start as a back row player. I don't know. I know that Jaelyn desperately wants to be that player. I am pulling for her, too. She's a great kid. I want to see her do it.

So... all B1G 10 schools charter flights to all of their locations? I would be interested to know if this is true ... or is it more about the fact that a lot of B1G schools are no where near a significant airport (even Tucson) -- like most PAC schools are.

I know that charters in the Pac-12 are not uniform even in WBB. Arizona only recently started chartering for women's basketball. UCLA has done it for a while. Arizona volleyball almost never charters. I think maybe once in the 6-7 years I have covered them. It was to Oregon and the football team had a game up there at the same time. They got to go on the football team's charter. I don't even remember them getting a charter last time they made the NCAA Tournament and had to go to Lincoln. It can be a nightmare. Last year when Arizona went to Boulder, their flight was canceled. They had to get up and drive to Phoenix the day of the match and fly from there. Made it to Boulder just a couple of hours before the match. Pac-12 delayed the match a couple of hours, but told Arizona they had to play that day or forfeit. Rubio was furious even though they won. As for the Big Ten, Gwen has the most experience with Nebraska and Indiana. I am not sure how much with the others.

I spoke to China Rai Crouch today for the first time since February 2021. I last talked to her after their first match vs Oregon State in 2021. Two days later, she was injured. She told me about why she was gone both for the rest of the covid season and last year,as well as what's going on now.

Here are match recaps from the Stanford and Cal matches. I am putting them here because Rubio made significant changes in substitution patterns this weekend. It looks like he is just going to ride with his pins in the back row instead of subbing them out as a matter of course. Jaelyn Hodge has been unhappy not being able to play back row. I hadn't talked to Sofia Maldonado Diaz and Puk Stubbe prior to this weekend about this topic, but I doubt they were any happier. Rubio said that even if it's just 3% more time on the court, it makes them happy not to be taken out. He is also playing Sofia on the right side and Puk on the left. It was like flipping a switch for Puk. She has struggled all season, but was really effective against both Stanford and Cal on the offensive side of things. There were problems with transition and communication with the changes, especially against Cal, but they can work on those. He said that unless they get caught in a rotation, he will probably stick with this substitution pattern. That will probably upset a few of those subs (especially Dilara Gedikoglu if it means less time for her) but I think making his starters happy and more effective is far more important.
