undefeated noncon! I know we didn’t play a tough schedule by any means, but I still would’ve been surprised if you told me we got to conference play unscathed before the season.
Scoggins is the truth. best pure setter we’ve had since Snuka. Cisneros is so steady and all around. Robey is probably the best middle we’ve had in a LONG time outside of MAYBE 5th year Zyonna. Jaelyn on the right is so much better, and Jordan is really making some money from the back row attacking. Ginder has been a passing revelation especially next to Cisneros.

I don't care about SOS because, frankly, I sat and watched them lose to teams last year that were similar to some they played this year. They look like a team. And they seem to be happy. Jordan is having some consistency issues, but I'm not too concerned because she's doing a lot of other good stuff for the team. I also think she's more comfortable. Last year, I got a lot of platitudes from her. It was like she was afraid of stepping on toes. She doesn't seem like that this year. The injuries are a concern. There are some updates in the recap from the Southern Utah match. I am looking forward to conference play.

Avery won the Big 12 Rookie of the Week this week. With Carlie winning the first week, it's the first time the Wildcats have had two different conference newcomers of the week in the same season in program history. Fortunately, we got to talk to Avery just yesterday, so I have a few quotes from her and Rita for this story.

your average RPI win right now is 221 . . you have not played anyone above 115 with 8 wins against teams below 200 - ya we might have to take that into consideration - the Arizona SID certainly hasnt

Imagine being such a fool that you neither understand that nor what the job of an SID is. Carry on with whatever makes you feel good, though.

A couple of articles ahead of tonight's Big 12 opener. I did a notebook that just has some odds and ends about passing, the freshmen, the staff's upgraded offices, and travel. One of our other writers did a short preview of the games this week and what lies ahead in conference play with finally facing some ranked opponents.

I forgot to put this recap in after the ASU match. It was a much, much better effort against the Sun Devils than we saw in either match last season. The fourth set wasn't good, but I felt they were in the other 3 and probably should have been up 2-1 after 3. Doesn't happen when you have 19 service errors against a good team, though. At least no one quit the team and hopped a plane to the Netherlands the day after this time, I guess. I also got the story about Jaelyn done. I combined it with one about Journey because they both stand out this season with much improved play. The rash of matches against ranked/RV opponents is over for a couple of weeks. They have the Utah/BYU/ASU streak again at the end of the month. As long as they play like they did against ASU and BYU--and even Baylor--I think they'll be fine. The matches against TCU and Utah were bad. Serve has got to get better. That's the part of the game that has killed them even when they otherwise played well. They were at 56 in RPI going into the ASU match. They had dropped by 4 spots. Need to get wins to start bumping that back up.

I had hoped to talk to both Brenna Ginder and Haven Wray this week to see how the dual-libero thing is working from their perspectives. I was only able to get Brenna, though. I did get some passing numbers from the coaches before the ASU match, though, so there's some relevant stats here for both of them.

I was kind of bummed that I didn't get to talk to Brenna Ginder and Haven Wray at the same time last week, but now I'm glad. I talked to Haven this week. She was great. I also got some stuff from Rita about how she wants to build the roster under the 18-player roster limit, including that she wants Haven to return as a redshirt senior. I didn't include that she said she'll be going after a middle and at least one more little in the portal this offseason. I plan to write more about roster construction with the new roster limits, but there's a little bit here.

A look at where things stand at the midpoint of conference season. While I agree with Rita that the team is "very, very close," the question is how long they can hang around in that "oh-so-close" area and it still be acceptable. The team has some very young pieces at every position (S, OH, MB, L/DS), but they also have some really experienced players out there, too. The youth excuse doesn't explain it all. It just can't when you have a fifth-year OPP, a senior MB, and a junior OH starting alongside a freshman OH and a sophomore MB. One of the liberos is also a senior to offset the fact that the other one is a freshman, and the primary reserves are a senior MB and a junior setter.

This team is giving 2022 vibes big time. Just an inability to pull out wins. In your opinion, do we have to win out to make the tournament?
