I talked to Rita this morning about the class. Didn't realize Chloe Giehtbrock is redshirting, so scratch the idea of the 2nd libero being a setter. The setters will be Avery and Ana next year. But Haven is still a possibility for the 2nd libero.
What they should have next year before additions/subtractions:
OH: Carlie, Jordan, Paige Thies
OPP: Syd, Annie, Renee Jones
MB: Journey, Adrianna, Maya Flemister
S: Avery, Ana, Chloe Giehtbrock (redshirt)
L/DS: Brenna, Gio, Haven (maybe), Brookelyn Hatton
That would leave Rita 2 openings for the portal to get to 18 players.
If Haven returns, I think they could stand pat at littles. She said 4-5 at that position. If Haven goes, they need a quality little from the portal. I also wonder if Gio will return, but that's a question for another day.
She's already said she wants a middle from the portal. She wants to carry 4, and I think they need one experienced middle to complement that group, anyway.
They could really use an OPP from the portal, too. We haven't seen Syd over there much because Jae has been holding it down. Syd has played mostly the left side this year when she comes in. Before the season, I know Rita wasn't high on Syd playing OPP. Annie never plays. I don't think Renee is going to be ready, especially if she doesn't come this spring. Whether they have room to add here depends on who stays and who goes after the season.
At Arizona, they will have the equivalent of 14.5 scholarships to give to their 18-player roster under the new rules. If the new rules are formally adopted, those can be spread across all 18 players. From what I understand talking to coaches of other headcount sports, you can also package merit aid (i.e. academic aid) with the athletic aid to get to a full ride now. Of course, the player has to be a good student to get that aid, but you could technically give her 70% of an athletic scholarship and the other 30% could come from the academic side. The remaining 30% of that athletic scholarship could go to another player, and that's a change from the old system. What I was told was that under the old rules, if that 30% of athletic aid was covered by 30% of academic aid, the rest of the athletic aid was just lost. It couldn't go to someone else under headcount rules, so the program simply didn't have it to give anymore.
