Looks like AZ will be hosting a Spring tourney March 26th weekend, based on ASU posting about it. omg I have the spring schedule and never even thought to post it. I don’t think it’s a secret. Let me go find it.

Four spring tournaments, do not know opponents:
March 26 @ Home April 2 @ ASU April 9 @ UTEP April 23 @ SDSU
looks like we’ll play ASU three times. I know it’s spring so different lineups will be thrown around, but hope we get more of what we saw last season against them lol, that second game against them was probably our best all season

I know it’s not really a thing for spring ball but would love to see the progress of the young middles. I know China is back but has she been at spring practice?

I know the men’s club team streams on Facebook live, maybe we could do the same? Not sure. China’s return will most likely be for the 2023 season so I’m guessing she will join the team next spring.

Without China the scholarship count I think you said is at eleven correct? It will be interesting to see if Rubio tries to add someone from the portal. I know it isn’t a priority but I can’t help but wonder.

I don’t think he would be opposed, but they are looking for something very specific and with Zy back, I’m not he’ll budge much on exactly what he’s looking for. I wish I had access to the portal, because I truly don’t even know what 5th year middles are even left in the portal

I am going to see if I can go watch. I won't write about it, but I would love to be able to see them.

The Arizona-ASU scrimmage just ended. Wildcats won 2-0 (25-16, 25-23). They got out to big leads both sets. Sun Devils took a lead late, but they couldn't hold it.
ASU has to fix the passing. Atrocious.

My biggest takeaways for Arizona - Alayna Johnson looks great. She was very active on the block and was also getting her share of swings.
- Jaelyn Hodge was very aggressive but also seemed to hit a high percentage. We don't have stats, but she wasn't missing much. The only problem I see with Hodge is she's still going crosscourt with everything. I would like to see her go down the line once in a while just to keep the defense honest.
- Arizona only had 8 or 9 players there. Dilara is with the beach team, so we knew she wouldn't be there. Zyonna wasn't there. I think Rummel might have been, but since they don't have numbers and I don't recognize the freshmen yet, I'm not completely sure. ASU brought 14 players by my count.
- Everyone served well for Arizona. Very few service errors. But, of course, everyone looks like a great server against ASU's serve receive.
- The only team that Arizona had trouble with was Arizona Sizzle. Paige Whipple played for them. It's coed, so the challenges were different.

Thank you for the highlights! It will help the team tremendously if Jaelyn and Sophia can limit their errors and develop more versatility in their game. Also very excited to hear that Alayna was doing well blocking wise. If Puk can step it up, the defense should make notable improvement next season.

Atrocious. Same thing about ASU the past few years. You think by now they could get some quality backrow players, or a passing coach.

So Arizona actually fielded two teams for the tournament. I only got to be with one of them, but the teams were fluid so I saw most players (al but Sofia and Emery) play.
Alayna had the day of her college career so far probably. She was quite frankly incredible all day. Against GCU, in two sets, she had almost 30 swings and was hitting close to .500 (think she was at .480?). When she actually got set, our offense looked so much better everywhere else. Nicole Briggs is out with an injury. Zyonna Fellows had to play opposite for most of the games which isn’t her natural position so any comments on her play don’t really matter per se.
The pins I saw were very inconsistent all day. On and off, very streaky. Puk played on the left due to necessity. Looked great some of the time, and lost the ability to terminate a ball in others. Jaelyn was the ultimate rally ender for a while, you were either getting a kill or error with every swing. Lauren Rumel looked pretty good at outside. She’s a freak athlete and I think she has a TON of potential there. She even held up pretty well in serve receive considering she doesn’t get to practice it much due to being with the middles a lot.
Emery and Ana were running a 6-2 in the other gym until Ava Torterello had to sit last two games to a lingering injury she had coming in. I’m not going to really comment on how she played just because I know she was really really hurting. Ana’s connection with Alayna was great but she struggled some setting Zyonna (which makes sense, they’ve barely practiced together at all) and Merle (also makes complete sense for same reasoning). She had a couple huge blocks that were fun to watch.
Kamaile was, as always, amazing. Passed extremely well all day. There was one game where I think she got 3 digs in a single rally. I think to have a “best libero in the Pac” conversation and not at least mention her name would be extremely disrespectful. The other libs did not impress anyone nearly as much except for maybe freshman Kaori Robertson who went on 4 (I think) different LONG service runs, including one where the opposing staff had to burn a timeout to ice her. She had some solid digs when playing defense in those rotations too, but she didn’t pass much as she was mainly used as a serving sub.
Overall, I would have loved our passing to hold up a bit better. Our pins need to frankly just kill more balls, the kill percentages for a while were ridiculously low. And we need to focus on SETTING THE MIDDLE as much as we can.

This is why I didn't see Jaelyn until the ASU match. I was in McKale all day. I didn't go to RJ. So, I didn't see most of her play.
