How does she look? new players in the gym are always great. high motor, a huge desire to play and get better, etc. that being said, of course she’s a little rusty and raw, but she’s given the team something/someone to rally around a little bit? she’s been friends with most of the girls so that’s been no transition at all. |

That’s good to hear! I was watching some high school highlights and said new player looks like they hit a heavy ball. The approach appeared to need work and blocking fluidity but definitely would be great to see them in the gym! |

Any word on how the San Diego tournament went? heard it got worse as the day went on. I think they were a bit burnt out. Apparently they played San Diego pretty tough which is good though considering they’ll be very good next season |

I am going to Pac-12 BVB tomorrow. I am sure Dave will be there since Dilara is playing and his daughter is on the team. I will see if I can get something from him--at least set something up. |

However, I do think he is a good coach. He may not have the best team in the Pac, but (except for these past few seasons) he has put together quality NCAA tournament teams in the past and been a pillar in the Tucson community. If they didn’t resign him, who would they get? I can’t imagine the budget is massive enough for volleyball to hire an elite, established coach from another school. |

Dave quite obviously wants Rita to replace him when he goes. He told me when he hired Lauren Plum that he wanted to get her up to speed so she and Rita could take over when he was ready to hang it up. As for whether he should retire, I don't know whether Arizona will be better when he does or not. I do know that I will personally miss him when he retires, though. I think he's passionate about what he does, but he also knows what he's done wrong and he will admit it. He's just a couple months shy of 63 and he's still actively trying to improve, both as a coach and as a person. That's something I admire. I also admire a person who is direct, which he definitely is. It's something he and I have in common. It doesn't really matter whether it pisses people off; I'm going to say what I think. I can't stand people who are overly political, trying to please everyone and saying nothing. His directness is something I wish more people had. I like that he's a teacher at heart. He doesn't get the top recruits, but he knows how to teach the players he gets and help them improve. The essence of coaching is being a teacher, and I think he's great at that. He may not be the most in-touch with this generation of players. He may have baggage. He may be too harsh at times. But I think the good outweighs the bad and Arizona has been lucky to have him for over 30 years. I will be excited to see what's next when he does retire, though. Anyway, back to the Lauren Ware thing. I confirmed with Arizona that she's practicing and put in requests to talk to her and Dave. Hopefully I get them soon. I'm interested to see what she has. She hasn't played since she was a junior in high school. I thought Arizona volleyball was better off if she just decided to stay away, but maybe they need a middle that badly. She's certainly got the size that they have lacked in the middle too often. A few months ago when women's basketball was still playing, he jokingly asked me to ask her if she was ready to come back to volleyball. Maybe it wasn't a joke. lol |
