In the discussion about improving passing, there seem to be several discussion subtopics. On the topic of changing the ball in NCAA play, what would be the downside of that?

Many on here will disagree with me, but I enjoy being a fan of the sport and being able to watch both "versions", for lack of a better term. There were 340 or so NCAA Div. 1 programs I believe last year, with an average of 17 roster athletes. It's pretty clear that as an entity it doesn't exist for the purpose of producing USAV NT members. I love watching all-around players. It's a lot of fun to see in any National team or pro match and even the college players who are capable of playing 6 rotations and contributing that way to the team, I'm a fan. But there have been a lot of smalls over the years that I have loved watching as well. If substitutions were significantly more limited in order to allow for more/most hitters staying on the court, there are plenty of other players that wouldn't have been able to make the impact they did and I would've missed out. I actually agree with this - improving the passing and D makes NCAA volleyball really fun to watch. I have loved watching a lot of backrow specialists play. And I actually think that discrepancies among programs would be worse if everyone was supposed to have all pins pass. I would add that the size of the NCAA means that we still have a lot of passing pin hitters coming out of college. Most teams are still very keen to have an OH who passes well. Generally, if one can, they get to do it. There are to fill the NT coffers. Of course, the problem isn't just preparation for the national team, but also preparation for pro leagues. We train a lot of smalls who will never play professionally because of rules restricting foreigners, and a lot of pin hitters who are not as well prepared to pass as they need to be if they want to have a pro career at all.

Preliminary VNL stats - Some of the blocking stats are incorrect. I fixed the ones that I knew. (Also FIVB's attacking stats aren't perfect). In general, should be a decent ball park number. (also my math could be wrong lol) Outside HittersFrantti: 4.57 kps, .415, .71 b/s, .07 aces/set Frantti finished the VNL hitting 4.59 kps, .429 lol. #KarchOut His ego is going to get in the way of winning if he stay the course. This kumbaya crap will be his downfall.

I doubt starting Plummer over Frantti or SWP had much to do with kumbaya, it was an experiment for another reason. But it was certainly a mistake. Setting choices being the primary other mistake. I think we’ll see some changes to our system by the time WCh starts, and I doubt we’ll see Plummer start in any important matches at WCh.

Plummer needs a backrow sub if she continues to start for the WCh. If only we had a Courtney to do that.

I am curious is Karch and the staff have decided to invest in her long term like they did with MBH, Hancock, SWP, Tapp and JWO. That cluster all broke onto the team in 2016/17 and have contributed in major ways. I definitely wanted to see KP splash onto the scene and help lead the team to glory. It seems that she will be taking the slower (MBH) approach to developing her passing. I'm curious if she starts at all the rest of the season. I think she very well could still make the WCH roster but I won't be shocked if she doesn’t. I am also curious if we see any of this VNL group at the Pan-Am's or not? It's proximity to the WCH might not allow this.

it took him 2 sets to decide plumber's pipe was not it I don't think she will be kicked out of the program. I think Karch has chosen to invest in her and the other young outsides for this quad. I doubt anyone is getting cut. Now, she might not make the WCH roster but I'm sure she will grow and learn from that experience. I doubt she is going anywhere. She will learn from this performance.

Also, if the goal was to develop players, maybe play them more in group stage rather than a quarterfinals? At least don't make an ugly face if you lose in that case.

Where did that happen? I was kinda in disbelief at that moment. I might not have been paying attention.

I don't mean a literal ugly face, but more like: if you want to develop plummer play her for all three sets, don't bring frantti in and try to save the team down 0-2
