Cal Poly really imploded the second half of the Big West season. They ran out of gas after beating Hawaii. That was a good wake-up call for Hawaii. They haven't lost since...including returning the favor in Honolulu. I was excited my Anteaters came out on top tonite. I really thought this match was going to go either way. But UCI closed it out in four sets.

Cal Poly really imploded the second half of the Big West season. They ran out of gas after beating Hawaii. Dvoracek hasn’t been her All-American self this season. I don’t think it’s just their passing limiting the sets to the rightside, maybe the setter switch is part of it. She is so used to Denecochea setting her the ball for the past 3 years. Just my thoughts.

I am glad Hawai'i won the automatic bid. I hope other teams take the NACWAA? bids and do as well as I think they will, because they are very good now!

All-Big West Selection Predictions
Player of the Year: Amber Igiede, JR, MB, Hawai’i Setter of the Year: Kate Lang, SO, Hawai’i Freshman of the Year: Caylen Alexander, OH, Hawai’i Coach of the Year: Robyn Ah Mow, Hawai’i
All-Big West First Team (16) Emme Bullis, R-FR, S, Cal Poly Maia Dvoracek, SR, OPP, Cal Poly* Tommi Stockham, SO, OH, Cal Poly* Caylen Alexander, FR, OH, Hawai’i Amber Igiede, JR, MB, Hawai’i* Kate Lang, SO, S, Hawai’i Riley Wagoner, JR, OH, Hawai’i* Morgan Chacon, R-JR, OH, Long Beach State* Zayna Meyer, R-FR, S, Long Beach State Josephine Ough, SR, MB, UC Davis Onye Ofoegbu, JR, MB, UC Irvine* Joy Umeh, JR, OPP, UC Irvine Michelle Ohwobete, SO, OH, UCSB* Macall Peed, SR, L, UCSB* Deni Wilson, SR, MB, UCSB Ava McInnes, SO, OH, UC San Diego
Honorable Mention (10) Meredith Phillips, SR, MB, Cal Poly Elizabeth Schuster, JR, S, Cal State Fullerton Lyla Traylor, SO, OH, Cal State Fullerton Dylan De La Cruz, SR, L, Long Beach State Katie Kennedy, SR, OPP/MB, Long Beach State Casi Newman, SO, S, UC Davis Demari Webb, JR, OH, UC Davis Campbell Jensen, FR, L, UC Irvine Izzi Strand, JR, S, UC San Diego Tallulah Froley, SR, OPP, UCSB
Big West All-Freshman Team (7) Nadia Koanui, L, Cal State Fullerton Lolo Fonua, OH, Cal State Fullerton Bianca Martinez, MB, Cal State Fullerton Breana Mitchell, L, CSUN Caylen Alexander, OH, Hawai’i* Jade Light, OH, UC Davis Campbell Jensen, L, UC Irvine*
* = My guess on who is unanimous pick
Notes: This is what I think the Big West will vote for the all-conference selections, NOT what I personally think it should be.
POY: My guesses were up and down with Igiede and Dvoracek being the head-to-head for POY until recently. Dvoracek’s kills total wasn’t as great but what kept her in the race was her aces and defense to make statistically a very very well rounded player. But as Cal Poly’s performance started to dip, her chances started to diminish. Igiede, well speaks for herself. A go-to player as a middle, her numbers resemble the Big West great Jennifer Keddy from Cal Poly. If Igiede does not win POY than she would arguable be robbed. Ofoegbu is a good third option as she has very good numbers for a middle, unfortunately for her she has to compete against another great middle whose numbers are higher.
SOY: For setter of the year… I feel the Big West voters have an attachment to Bullis & Meyer over Lang. The redshirt frosh definitely struggled at times throughout the year but both had some stellar matches for their teams. Lang IMO should have picked up a few more Setter of the Week awards over them but oh well. Lang set her team to a first place finish and the best hitting percentage and kills team which I think is important for this category of course. Meyer & Bullis do have good all-around numbers but they of course are close behind Lang for this spot. However, like I said the voters seem to like them so whoever wins this, it won't be unanimous.
FOY: Alexander has been a bright spot for Hawaii this season, picking up five FOW awards. If Meyer and Bullis are eligible (see my shpeel on freshmen at the bottom), they can steal potentially steal this from Alexander. Another freshmen who I have liked this season was Jensen from UCI. Led the conference in digs as a freshman on a team that finished in the top half. Although liberos don’t always get a lot of love, she is a second contender for FOY.
COY: If not Ah Mow, she's been robbed. Enough said.
First-Team & HM: Amongst the First Team and Honorable Mention, there are a few I am on the bubble with moving up or down. I used specifically conference only stats because that should be applied when doing conference awards. If McInnes isn't First Team, it'll bother me, despite a low hitting percentage, she had some good kill numbers (top 3 in the Big West). I am not secure on Alexander being first team even if she is FOY, in conference her hitting was similar to some I have on HM like Frolley, Traylor, Kennedy, and Webb. On HM if I were to make a swap, I may take off Shuster from CSUF and add Lahav from Davis.
All-Freshman Team: Looking back at Big West Freshman of the Year & All-Freshman teams in the most recent years, it seems like the only redshirt freshman that received accolades for those specific categories were players who redshirted due to injury their original freshman year (with the exception of 2021 season due to COVID).
I am not specifically sure what the rules are, especially since last season Tommi Stockham racked up numerous Freshman of the Week Awards all season long but never received Freshman of the Year or even All-Freshman team. The only thing I can think of as to why that happened was because she actually got to play a COVID season at Indiana and was not eligible for postseason awards as a freshman. So unsure of players like Bullis & Meyer who may or may not be placed on this team since they did win FOW awards this season despite being RS freshmen.
IF redshirt freshman are allowed for the All-Freshman selection, then here is my revised list.
Big West All-Freshman Team (7) Emme Bullis, S, Cal Poly Lizzy Markovska, OH, Cal Poly Lolo Fonua, OH, Cal State Fullerton Bianca Martinez, MB, Cal State Fullerton Caylen Alexander, OH, Hawai’i Zayna Meyer, S, Long Beach State Campbell Jensen, L, UC Irvine

Great list. A couple of things to note. The Big West manual says that there is a first and second team now, though it doesn't say how it is decided or if there are any rules regarding the need for a libero to be on the first team. But the 16 all conference selections would be split between the 2 teams.
There is a libero of the year that has been added to the awards.

If Igiede does not get POY after having the highest hitting percentage in the Big West and winning the Championship, it’ll probably be the biggest robbery in history.

Revised version with the new changes to all-conference predictions. Thank you for the heads-up roy It was slightly difficult to separate the first and second team. I had 10 who I think could be first team but had to bring two down. Igiede, Peed, Dvoracek, and Ofoegbu are guarantees IMO. My issue with UCSB players (aside from libero) is that they are more of a balance offensively. Wilson leads the conference in blocks and is second in hitting percentage but averages less than 2 KPS. You compare her to Igiede and Ofoegbu who put up kills, blocks, and hitting percentage, the thing she has over Ofoegbu is a better team record. If there needs to be a libero on Second Team then De La Cruz takes a spot, switch with either Alexander, McInnes, or Bullis.
