I am pretty sure the Pacific fans made the same arguments when they hired John Dunning. And Purdue fans when they hired Dave Shondell. Get over it and wait to see what happens. Well, hold on. Pacific's fans probably totaled 20 and they were just happy to have matches to go to, nor did they have any idea of the coaching landscape. Similarly with Purdue, I don't think many people had an expectation of who Purdue should hire, or that it should be a "home run." It's a different world now, expectations are different.

Schumacher's hiring can be "underwhelming" but not "wrong" at the same time. Time will tell. Just like an explosive higher won't always be "right." Maybe more importantly than on-court results to start with, I think recruiting classes will be a key factor to judge whether she's a good hire -- can she sell the PSU brand sans Rose and get consistently top classes. She better be a helluva recruiter, cupboards pretty bare in a brutal conference with legendary coaches with high player recognition a d great track records. Hasn't she been recruiting there for the last 4 years, with her recruiting responsible for the current state of the cupboard?

Purdue fans did not have the high expectations that they have now. I was a season ticket holder then. You could sit anywhere that you wanted in Holloway. You could also just walk in too…they barely even checked tickets in the early 2000s. Then the team went to the Sweet 16 for the first time in a long time….then people started to notice the team with Lynch, Miller, Dildine, Mastandrea, Mader, and Merlau. Purdues fan base has grown so much and is selling out now on the regular. Shondell was a home run and I don’t know if Morgan Burke knew how good of a coach he just hired. His name was known…but that doesn’t always translate into an amazing coach.

Am I alone in feeling that Rose’s statement at then end of the press release is somewhat tepid?

You do know that the communications department writes the quotes, right?
Here's how it goes:. Katie, here's your pull quote (shows sentences). Katie says ok. Sometimes the person being quoted doesn't even see it first.

There are only so many "big name" coaches available when there's an opening.
A lot of "big name" coaches probably don't want to replace a legend.
Many "big name" coaches don't want to walk away from what they've built.
Many of the "big name" coaches are a little long in the tooth.
A lot of "big name" coaches would bring along their own baggage.
Every "big name" coach was mostly a "nobody" at one time.
College sports is full of "nobody" coaches who became "big name" coaches.

Posted the following in the Penn State 2022 thread, before realizing this thread existed.
First tier minimum performance gauge: see if the team continues making the tournament. Second tier performance gauge: see how well she recruits over the next 2-3 years.
My guess is that she'll get a maximum of 5 years to prove herself before the AD considers replacing her. Should be an interesting ride, to say the least. I really hope she succeeds.

Our SID just made them up for me and all the other coaches.

She very well may do a fine job, but have you ever seen a hire met with less enthusiasm? That’s disappointing in and of itself. I’m not sure this hire energizes team, fan base, potential recruits. JFO

Though as a journalism grad, when I wrote press releases, I almost always interviewed the principals, and they always appreciated it. Now, they were often surprised that I wanted to actually interview them because many/most PR writers just do it the way you describe.

Over a period of time for which she has been the recruiting coordinator. Have you looked at the cupboard. Her first incoming class was 2021. Last I checked, there are only 36 rotations available.
