Some people are going to read that title and think Hawaii instantly.
Abbie Jackson (especially) and Isabel Theut are also a part of the video, and not freshmen, and major contributors for Houston.
Abbie Jackson was #9 nationally in attempts/set and #44 in kills/set in the 2021 season.
Jackson and Theut also deleted their twitter accounts.

Very sad...extremely disrespectful and in very poor taste....I can't imagine the black teammates of theirs will be very welcoming, not sure how they come back from this....that being said, I would hate for their lives to be ruined because of one moment of weakness --- without knowing anything about these young women, I would like to believe that it was just that and not a reflection of their nature

From what I can tell watching the video, there isn’t any sound. I see the caption, but there’s no indication that’s why they’re laughing. Nor do I have any reason to believe this was brought up as a point of pride.
Wouldn’t it be plausible that a college team has had discussions about our country’s racist history and it was once brought up by this player that she is embarrassed about this fact about her hometown? I’m not saying that is how it happened, but I’m not ready to write off these players for what I’ve seen so far.

If that were true I don’t think they would nonchalantly call it “the tree where we used to hang people”. Context clues matter and you missed every one of them.

What does a(n) 18- to 22-year-old in 2022 know about a lynching tree? Stop the mental gymnastics. Rhetorical question. The Univ of Houston athletes involved were, perhaps, reciting what their parents told them, whose parents told them, whose parents told…. IMO, that is how such a mindset to flippantly speak on the evil deeds of Americans is perpetuated. Completely insensitive. No, you can’t fix this ignorance or stupidity. No repercussions confirm acceptance of the bad behavior. Silence is approval. Hoping they face some punishment to deter them, and others, from engaging in this hurtful behavior.

It’s 2022 this behavior should not be tolerated anymore 🤷🏿♂️

The caption, with zero context, absolutely racist. Anyone of us can post a snap video and someone says something like, "The United States where we used to (insert any terrible racist thing in our history)". I would like to see the video with audio, and know what these players were talking about before and after. If they were laughing at that 1935 incident then this would indeed be very very bad, and stupid as Phaedrus says.

Maybe don't film a video of you and your friends being gleefully racist and then share it with everybody if you're worried about external consequences for your actions.
