Because her passing, defense, and out of system attacking (which is what is actually valued for an OH at an international worlds competition) isn't currently better than a number of other 2024 and 2025 players. I get that but she made the previous summer's team with a more veteran roster with Mullen. It was a headscratcher. Plenty of USAV rosters need to be taken with a grain of salt. The 2022 U19 team played a regional competition with all the class of 2023 pipeline players (who were the actual starters). Team USAV had little fear of not qualifying and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to get some much younger players (Spears and Mullen) some valuable training experience for future development. But lets not kid ourselves into thinking that in the summer of 2022 Spears was actually among the top 4 U19 OH's and Mullen among the top 2 U19 Opposites in the country - it's just not true, and I think every coach in the country would tell you that.

Do these publications tend to rank based on past achievements or potential? Positionally, I would think a 6ro OH would be above a front row only OH or Oppo. Saw Flynn on her official and she’s huge. Legit 6’ 3”. No idea what her back row defense is like but she should be a force as a blocker. Spears AVW Mullen Flynn
2025 will be real interesting with Reilly and Flynn. They'll have the weapons for a 6-2, but Bergen will have a couple of years running the offense. Redshirting seems like the most logical decision, but I guess we'll see.
+6'2 setters have the physicality at the net but almost ALWAYS have wonky location issues. She will need to redshirt.

At Nebraska, red shirts are a way of life. Now it will be, with all the top recruits coming in. But not previously?

Kind of like how Pierce fell in the rankings this year, from 1st to the 20's.

I don't think "wonky location issues" is something directly related to being 6'2, it's just that 6'2 setters are very uncommon, so it's more apparent. My guess is that the ratio of 6'2+ setters that DON'T have location issues is about on par with the number of setters under 6'2 that don't have location issues.

I have seen both Reilly and Flynn play live. Reilly is the better pure setter by a significant margin- my guess is Flynn redshirts 2025.

I think there is a bit of selection bias that contributes to this. 5-9 setters with location issues don't get recruited. Coaches see an elite athlete with great potential, good when she's on, but inconsistent location and be like:

Anyone else curious where Asia Harvey is looking? I think with her leaving A5 she had gotten a bad rap.

Anyone else curious where Asia Harvey is looking? I think with her leaving A5 she had gotten a bad rap. She definitely left on bad terms with A5, but I was hoping it wouldn’t affect her recruiting. Is it a possibility Stanford is looking at her?
