The South Dakota win over Omaha was clearly a big win. Whomever wins the Summit League will be a pretty good opponent for whomever faces them in the NCAA Tournament first round. For you, kiyoat, I hope it is a neutral site match with South Dakota playing someone in Minneapolis or Lincoln! That said, it will be a brutal league with so many solid squads trying to get that bid, but it will lead to a lot of good volleyball to watch! Exactly. I think the overall long-term goal for the conference (as it is with most/all mid-majors) would be to elevate the competition level to the point of getting an at-large bid occasionally, and to start getting a more favorable seed. I think things have been heading in that direction, but it’s a process. The quality of recruiting and transfers seems to be escalating for At least the top teams…

Upset:
South Dakota State just shocked Omaha 3-2!
Last year the Jacks looked impressive at the end of the season, this year it appears that They have put it together a little earlier…
Not sure what has Omaha rattled, but they looked like a different team at the end of the USD match than the start. (Couldn’t watch the premium stream vs SDSU)
Still plenty of season to go, but that one shocked me
In other news, both North Dakota schools won in sweeps, and ORU beat KC in 4

* all rankings and SOS from MasseyRatings.com The big change here is ORU beating KC and moving up in the rankings. Also SDSU over Omaha was an upset that gave each team their best win/ worst loss respectively. Seems like 5 teams fighting over the final three three Tournament spots in the middle tier, with North Dakota playing better than expected. Also, can SDSU pull another upset or two, and enter the top tier?

A mention of Omaha's ability (or lack of) to close out 5-set matches got me thinking, what's the 5-set match record for each team? So here you go: Team | 5-Sets | % | # | South Dak | 5-0 | 1.00 | 5 | NDSU | 3-1 | .750 | 4 | North Dak | 2-1 | .667 | 3 | St Thom | 2-1 | .667 | 3 | SDSU | 4-3 | .571 | 7 | ORU | 1-1 | .500 | 2 | KC | 2-3 | .400 | 5 | Omaha | 2-4 | .333 | 6 | Denver | 0-1 | .000 | 1 | Western Ill | 0-2 | .000 | 2 |
Conclusions? Looks like SDSU has actually had the most experience in 5-set matches, plus a winning record there. Could have been a contributing factor in the upset win over Omaha? NDSU looks good there as well. Could that experience help them close out close matches in the future? or in the tournament? Who knows. Surprisingly, Denver has only been in one vs Colorado.

A couple of matches this evening involving Omaha (free stream) and Denver (possibly a free stream?) For Denver, all home matches are available via a premium stream, and this match is also on Evoca TV (I think you need a subscription) HOWEVER: Looks like there might be a free link for streaming the game from the Summit website? Worth a try. St Thomas @ Denver links:Stream ($)EvocaTV ($)Summit Digital Network (free?)Live StatsI'll do a gameday thread for Omaha, but until I know for sure there is a free way to watch Denver, I'll wait until next time. Western Illinois @ Omaha Gameday thread(See Tweet below or gameday thread for Omaha links)

kiyoat getting my White Russians for the Omaha game tonight. Woot!! The Mavs looked dominant at times vs USD and SDSU, but couldn't close them out on their home courts. Now if they don't destroy the Leathernecks at Baxter, we can start talking about what is going on with them. I'm going to predict WIU won't break 18 in any set, and the match will be over by 8:30. How's that for a kiss-of-death prediction?

Going into the 2nd weekend of conference play, who predicted that the two undefeated teams left would be North Dakota State and Oral Roberts?

Going into the 2nd weekend of conference play, who predicted that the two undefeated teams left would be North Dakota State and Oral Roberts? Yeah, I'd chalk that up to unbalanced schedule, of course. Both of those teams have played the bottom-two teams. The upsets over USD and Omaha were big, but I think it will all balance out in the end. I'm not posting standings until they actually make sense (like waiting to release an official RPI until it makes sense)

Another episode of "The 7th Rotation" podcast is out (every Thursday). No coach interviews this week. rss.com/podcasts/seventhrotationpod/636463/(fair warning, the last 1/3 of it can be skipped, just talking about reality TV shows....)

Well, there was an upset last night (North Dakota sweeps KC), and unexpectedly strong performances from NDSU (swept Oral Roberts) and St Thomas (took a set from Denver @ Denver!).
The two XDSU schools are surging, and gunning for the top of the conference, meanwhile North Dakota and St Thomas are making plans to get out of the basement. UND's coach is doing a great job in his first year with a ton of roster turnover. Would not be surprised to see them go from a winless season to 6th place and a (Summit) tournament bid at this point. That's Coach-of-the-Year territory.
At the top, it isn't panic time, but all three of the "contender" teams have faltered early in the conference season. Can they regain dominance? Can the XDSUs crash the party? Plenty of season left. All of them have talented rosters and good coaching.
Stay tuned...
