Revisiting my preseason predictions for Summit non-con matches: (aka: "time to eat some crow") # | team | predict | actual | 10 | North Dakota | 5-6 | 3-8 | 9 | St Thomas | 3-9 | 2-10 | 8 | Western Ill | 3-10 | 4-9 | 7 | NDSU | 6-6 | 7-5 | 6 | SDSU | 9-3 | 6-6 | 5 | Oral Roberts | - | 3-9 | 4 | Kansas City | 5-8 | 3-10 | 3 | Denver | - | 6-5 | 2 | South Dakota | 9-3 | 11-1 | 1 | Omaha | 4-6 | 5-5 |
Which teams each school won or lost to is all over the place, so it's hard to make too many specific comments about that. In some cases the schedule wasn't finalized, so I was showing the wrong teams, and some opponents are just better or worse than last year's RPI (that I was basing my predictions on) anyway. Generally speaking, though, USD's performance was well above my expectation, and several teams were not as good as I predicted, notably SDSU. I didn't make a prediction for ORU or Denver, but given that Denver was the preseason pick to win the conference, I'd say they have under-performed somewhat.

* all rankings and SOS from MasseyRatings.com Not many major changes in the top tier. USD may be in good shape for an at-large consideration, or a good seed in the NCAAs. Omaha's record does not represent their potential in conference play, they had the toughest schedule by far, and played well in their losses. KC and UST added their worst losses in the final weekend of the non-conference, not boding well for them going forward. North Dakota and Oral Roberts both got their best wins of the non-con in the final weekend, beating Drake and Texas Tech (respectively)! Both teams will need to play better to get into the Summit post-season (6 team-playoff), so finishing the non-con strong is just what the doctor ordered.

South Dakota and Omaha both have no bad losses and have improved since the beginning of the season. I've enjoyed watching most of these two teams matches and I'm definitely looking forward to this Thursday's match. Unfortunately, as for Denver, I haven't seen any of their matches because of paywalls, and therefore, they are still somewhat of a mystery team for me.

Unfortunately, as for Denver, I haven't seen any of their matches because of paywalls, and therefore, they are still somewhat of a mystery team for me. Ditto for me. On the bright side, all of USD's home matches are on a free stream, so Saturday's match with Denver will be a good opportunity (just like the Thursday night match with Omaha) to get a feel for them. Both matches should be revealing. I doubt anybody gets swept from this group of teams. However,... I've been wrong before... I believe Denver has had to replace a lot of key positions through the portal. Also, their 7th-year HC Tom Hogan is being treated for testicular cancer (discovered just a month before the season), and will miss the season. That has to be a factor. Tom brought in Ohio State veteran coach Jim Stone as a volunteer (he had retired), and Jim appears to now be running the show for 2022. Interesting turn of events. Doesn't mean Denver will be out of the race, but I can understand that there would be an adjustment period.

I've viewed a few of Denver's games. I saw the Texas (don't judge me for that) vs Denver game and was pleasantly surprised at how well Denver performed. That game seemed like a turning point for them as a team. Their front row seems unstoppable at times, setter still seems to be trying to catch up to the skill of the attackers, and back row is sometimes inconsistent. They are definitely improving after their tough start. Can't wait to see how all the Summit League teams do this season.

South Dakota's Coach Williamson was the first coach to do an interview on the new "7th Rotation" podcast, covering Summit Volleyball. It's almost an hour, so if you want to fast forward to the interview, it's at 21:00 to 33:00 linksome quotes: Q: who do you look up to in the coaching world?A: Role-model-wise, Matt Houk, at Minnesota. He was the one that gave me my start at coaching. And obviously he's killing it up there now. Kathy Litzau (Milwaukee) was my head coach when I played in college, and she showed me not only what it was like to be a good coach, and how to run a program, but also how to have a family. How to balance that. That's something that means a lot to me, being a mom and a wife myself now. Understanding that I can have both. I think the 3rd person I would throw in there is Kirsten Booth at Creighton. She's obviously done wonderful things with that program, and I just very much respect how she goes about her everyday life; how she works to improve her program and how she goes about it the right way. As a female in this profession that's something that I value, and something that I look up to as well. Q: What keeps you in Vermillion?A: First off, I've been here from the beginning... The second year of transitioning to Division-I. Being a part of that transition and that process of building was really important (and fun) for me. In terms of keeping me here, I value the people I work with. I value the student-athletes in our program. I very much enjoy the people that are around me. And that makes it fun to do this job. The second part of it is that for me, I don't think we've hit our ceiling. I don't feel like we've hit a limit in terms of what this program can achieve, or what our student-athletes can achieve. And I think they're doing some pretty great things already. I'm confident that there's more that we can do, and from a competitor's standpoint, that's important to me, constantly feeling like there is something else out there that we can do, something else that I can help this program achieve. I wholeheartedly believe that. The third part of it is the community around USD. The support that we have, not only from the community of Vermillion, but outside of that. That people want to come in to support this team, to support this program, through wins and losses. And not only as volleyball players, but as people. That means the world to me. I very much believe in loving what you do. And I very much love it here. My kids love it here. My husband loves it here. We have a great life here. But again, I truly believe that there's more that we can do.

Looks like the two North Dakota schools over-performed predictions: North Dakota beat Western Illinois on the road, 3-1 NDSU beat St. Thomas 3-0
The other two matches went as expected: Denver beat SDSU 3-1 USD beat Omaha 3-2
Oral Roberts and Kansas City did not play, but will play each-other on Saturday.

Elizabeth Juhnke's stat line against Omaha:
30 points 28 kills 11 digs 3 blocks (one solo) 2 assists
I have to think that she would need to be benched against Denver to not win a fourth POW.

The South Dakota win over Omaha was clearly a big win. Whomever wins the Summit League will be a pretty good opponent for whomever faces them in the NCAA Tournament first round. For you, kiyoat, I hope it is a neutral site match with South Dakota playing someone in Minneapolis or Lincoln! That said, it will be a brutal league with so many solid squads trying to get that bid, but it will lead to a lot of good volleyball to watch!
