Pacific sweep of SMC? I'm surprised by this...was expecting perhaps the opposite result. I think the WCC has clearly 4 top teams this year. And the other 6 are going to beat up on each other.

Pacific swept Saint Mary's, -18, -16, -21. Watched some of the first two sets, and Saint Mary's was not really in either set. Pacific served aggressively, hit aggressively, and kept the Gaels on their heels a lot. Saint Mary's was a step slow, timid, out of position, and error-prone.
Pacific was led by OH Michigan State transfer Biamba Kabengele with 16 kills (.389) on 36 attacks and kept her errors to just two on the night. Ramonni Cook at opposite hat a fantastic match as well, hitting .421, with 11 kills and 3 errors on 19 attacks. Alexa Edwards added 10 kills (.214). The Tigers had 11 aces to 5 errors, so nearly double. SMC finished with 7 aces to 5 errors of their own, but I think Pacific had 5 or 6 in the first set and it really set the tone for the rest of the match. The disparity in digs was huge, with Pacific at +19 (66-47). Saint Mary's only hit .134 as a result, with just 25 kills. They had 7 fewer hitting errors, but they really struggled to score against Pacific's defense. It seemed like they made a lot of ball control errors on passing/setting. Opposite Hawley Harrer had a slow start but ended up being the only Gael with double digit kills (13) on a .407 clip, but didn't have much help. They've got Kristen Erland playing middle this year, and she had a pretty good match with 4 kills, 0 errors on 11 attacks (.364). Outside hitter Genevieve Bane, who's been very good recently, was held to a .029 (4/3/35). Their outside hitters were basically shut down. With the win Pacific is now 10-6 overall, and 2-2 in conference. Saint Mary's drops their first conference match to go to 3-1 in the WCC and 6-6 overall. EDITED TO ADD Pacific sweep of SMC? I'm surprised by this...was expecting perhaps the opposite result. I think the WCC has clearly 4 top teams this year. And the other 6 are going to beat up on each other. I am too. I thought they'd duke it out for 4 or 5 sets.

Thiros has 3 aces. Zags up 10-2. What the heck. And they started the match targeting the libero, McComber. Just shows where BYU is with their passing. Same as always.

BYU is now hitting .250 to Gonzaga's .121. But Gonzaga had those 4 early aces.
And just picked up a 5th ace. Yikes.

Croft blocked. Set point #2 Zags 24-23
Long rally, multiple free balls for BYU, but can't put the ball away. Great defense from the Zags, and I think it was Croft with the final shot that BYU couldn't get back. Zags win set one, 25-23
