I'm not too high on BYU right now; I need to see them in action other than a scrimmage. They seem a lot more unsettled than in previous years. I guess it's not surprising they were picked first, but I would have gone with San Diego. Hopefully the WCC is stronger top to bottom this year than in recent years.

This is just how preseason polls work. San Diego got swept in the first round, and BYU went undefeated in conference, went to the Sweet 16 and was ranked in the top 10 of the final poll. In the spring 2021 season, San Diego was the preseason favorite despite the obvious question mark at setter which ultimately killed them their last two seasons. We'll find out soon enough, as the top four WCC teams (including LMU) all have pretty difficult non-conference schedules.

Still, with what BYU lost and what San Diego retains, I would have thought it would be closer at least. But I also think that over the past few years they have become wary of not placing BYU first.

Yeah, betting against Heather Olmstead hasn't tended to be the smartest move. And yes, preseason polls are meaningless in all sports (they used to matter in football, but that changed with the advent of the playoff), which is why I don't see much point in complaining about them. I don't put much stock in any scrimmage, let alone an intra-squad scrimmage (I think they have some value in seeing who is winning the positional battles, but they don't tell us how good a team actually is because it's not a competition under real match conditions). We just don't know how these teams match up until they start playing real matches.

I've got this week's matches up in the 1st post (except for the 1 match on Sunday), with most of the links. Should I also put them in a new post or just leave them where they are?

I doubt she plays six rotations, but based on the scrimmage from Saturday, she seems to be the favorite to start at OH2.

Based on BYU's scrimmage, their starters are likely:
OH: Erin Livingston (lock) OH: Eden Bower MB: Heather Gneiting (lock) MB: Whitney Llarenas OPP: Kate Grimmer (lock) S: Whitney Bower (lock) L/DS: Some combination of Aria McComber, Kelsey Knudsen and whoever else they can plug in there

I agree with this, but I would be surprised if Llarenas doesn't start (but, yeah, she's not a lock). Wouldn't shock me if Prior passed her up at some point, but I think Llarenas is ahead right now. I expect E. Bower to start, but it certainly wouldn't be surprising to see Callahan get the start for at least one of the matches this weekend.

Llarenas looked awesome in the scrimmage, so I think she's as close to a lock without actually classifying her as one. As for Eden Bower, I tend to agree. I think she's the favorite right now, but if she goes into a slump at any point, I wouldn't be surprised to see Callahan or someone else get a look.

Zazu FTW! BYU is starting the season 2-0 (I think...I turned off the Duke stream when they were comfortably up in the fourth set) San Diego surprised Pitt in a really fun 5-set match earlier today. An impressive 1-0 start, and so fun to watch Blossom run the offense. Pepperdine is 2-0 even though Ahrens hardly played. Is she injured? LMU is 1-1 Santa Clara had an easy win over Chattanooga to start the season 1-0 Pacific is 1-1 after taking on Northeastern (W) and Northwestern (L) Portland is starting the season 2-0!! after a close 5th set win over Nevada San Francisco starts the season 2-0!! Gonzaga is 0-2... SMC is 0-1 with a bad 3-set loss to Boise State

San Francisco starts off their season 3-0 with a 4 set win over Grand Canyon! Congrats to the head coach on his first ever D1 wins!
