WCC 2022

BYU beaten easily by Georgia Tech 0-3 (20-25, 21-25, 14-25) in the Georgia Tech Classic to drop to 5-2. They hit .181 (32/15/94) for the match. Erin Livingston had 10 kills, but only hit .179 (10/5/28). They were aced 8 times and passing was bad again.

In the Washington Tournament, Pepperdine up 1-0 on Cal Poly after winning the first set, 25-22. Cal Poly leads set two, 20-15.

Pepperdine drops set two to Cal Poly, 22-25. Match tied 1-1. Grace Chillingworth (.286, 7/1/21) and Emily Helmuth (.294, 7/2/17) both have 7 kills. Pepperdine only hit .091 in set two, after hitting a sparkling .412 in set one.

Pepperdine squeezed out a 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 17-15) win over a winless Cal Poly team that was playing its second match of the day in the Husky Invitational. Waves hit .199 (58/25/166) to Cal Poly's .165 (62/34/170). Meg Brown continues to shine hitting .400 (15/3/30). The Waves are now 6-1 on the season.

Loyola Marymount defeated UCLA 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-19) at home after the San Jose State Tournament was moved to LMU instead. All their losses have been to ranked teams, so its good to see them finally win one. The win gets them to 3-3 on the season.

Good wins for both Pepperdine and LMU, but very weird matches, with all teams involved hitting really poorly (UCLA most of all).  No one in the LMU - UCLA match had more than 8 kills, though Geissberger had 8 kills with 0 errors.) LMU hit .159 in the win and UCLA hit .029!!  Pepperdine and Cal Poly also were both under .200 for the match.  Still, a win is a win.  (I see Ahrens had 5 kills, hitting negative for the match.  It sounds like she still is injured - abdominal strain? - and they are using her sparingly, but can't afford to take the court without her?)

What is BYU going to do to improve passing?  Their offense is good enough if they are in system, I think...

WCC is having a great season so far. They might have 4 teams in for the post-season.

Pepperdine had a very impressive 4-set win over Washington at Washington. They looked like the better team all match.

San Diego swept SMU.

Gonzaga was swept by Weber State.

Pacific was swept by New Mexico.

BYU swept again, this time by Ohio State. (19-25, 16-25, 25-27). They drop to 5-3 with 3 straight losses. Although all three are against top ten teams, they've only won one set and that was at home. I think they may have played Prior at opposite. Not sure though.

Pacific lost the 1st set 22-25 to Liberty, but has a 2-1 lead after winning the 2nd & 3rd -18, -19. Currently behind 10-15 in the 4th.

Pepperdine has a two-set lead over Northwestern by scores of -19, -15. Waves are up 11-7 in the 3rd. Oops had that backwards. Not sure if it was my brain or the stats.

Portland tied 1-1 with North Texas. Up 8-4 in the 3rd.

BYU was swept by Ohio State. There will be a tight 3-way race for the top of the WCC.

Pepperdine was swept by Northwestern, a few hours after giving Washington a spanking... ??  Set scores were -19, -15, -16.  I guess they left it all on the court vs UW.

Santa Clara was swept by Oklahoma (-23, -17, -22).

Pacific outlasted Liberty in 5 close sets (18-16 fifth set).

Portland lost to North Texas in 4 sets: 26-24, 19-25, 16-25, 15- 25

That makes more sense. I figured it was one of the middles, just wasn't sure which one.

Yeah, 5 sets with a 16-18 fifth set.  Unfortunate.  I noticed last week that Ayub did not play, and they were using a player listed on the roster as an Opposite to set.
Ayub is an excellent setter so I hope she will be back soon.
