Anybody else having trouble with WCC broadcast. After the first set, I couldn’t get USD UCLA last night. Can’t get Porland Seattle right now.

Saint Mary's raced out to a 15-8 lead in set one, then coasted to a 24-16 win. Saint Mary's hit .231 (10/4/26) led by opposite Hawley Harrer's .333 (4/1/9). Portland hit .074 (8/6/27) led by their opposite, Elin Larsson's .200 (4/2/10).
Portland up 8-5 early in set two.
I'm outta here for now.

First match of the conference season goes to Saint Mary's. They defeated Portland 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-5).
Hawley Harrer had a nice match for the Gaels hitting .400 (16-2-35) as did Kjersti Strong, .625 (10-0-16). Genevieve Bane added 13 kills but only hit .098 with 9 errors on 41 attempts.
For Portland Jayde Harris hit a sparkling .400 with 22 kills on 40 attempts/4 errors. Maui Robins followed with 11 kills at a .192 clip (11-4-26)

8 WCC teams have played their first conference match so far, with no really surprising results. (St. Mary's got the season off to a really rough start, but are showing that they are a better team than that, with their 5 set win over Portland.) Gonzaga may be the bottom, or near the bottom team.
Top 4 teams: BYU took care of LMU pretty easily in a sweep. Pepperdine gave San Diego some trouble, taking the first set, but San Diego seemed to be comfortably in control after that. So, USD is probably the top team so far, with BYU/Pepperdine right behind, and LMU hoping to be able to take one of these matches against the top 3.
San Francisco hosts Santa Clara this evening in the first conference match for both teams. Santa Clara has had some real struggles in serving and passing, which has made them much less effective than they should be on paper. USF got out to a hot start, but have been playing without their setter, Ayub, for quite a few matches, and her absence makes them a different team. Not sure if she is healthy or not for tonight.
Everyone else is back in action Saturday, with the top 4 teams facing each other again. I think San Diego will have no trouble with LMU, but I think Pepperdine vs BYU is going to be a very competitive match. ( Pacific vs Portland should also be interesting. I think SMC will handle Gonzaga easily.)

Santa Clara with a sweep over San Francisco, -21, -19, -22. Kind of surprising.
Didn't get to watch any of it, but one stat that really jumps out is Santa Clara's 13 aces to 4 errors, while San Francisco had 4 aces to 9 errors. That was probably the difference, along with five more digs for Santa Clara (47 to 42). Hitting was nearly even with Santa Clara at .313 (40/9/99) to .306 (44/10/111) for USF. Both had five blocks and both had 36 assists. Julia Sangiacomo took the most swings as usual (34) and led with 13 kills. Layla Truitt had another nice match, hitting .400 (11/1/25) as did Sophia Tulino, .350 (10/3/20). USF was led by Maria Petkova at .421 (18/2/38). She is having a great season for the Dons. Claire Crijns added 9 kills (.250) and Orsula Staka 6 (.333).

Stats say that Ayub played one set for USF? USF isn't the same without her but Nicolai not bad

Despite my comment that SCU has been struggling in serve receive and in serving, they definitely won that vs USF. Ayub also not available for USF... Truitt as a freshman for SCU getting 11/1/25 as an OH is VERY impressive.

It seemed that whenever BYU had a head-scratching play that LMU one-upped them and head an even more head-scratching play to lose the point. Both teams had good moments, but no sustained consistent execution. It was too often junk ball. Neither team seems to be in good form right now, so I'd be surprised if San Diego doesn't sweep LMU at home. I think Pepperdine at BYU is a toss-up. I give the edge to BYU at home, but I could see Pepperdine winning this one if BYU doesn't play better than they did on Thursday. Pacific at Portland could go either way and Saint Mary's should beat Gonzaga in Spokane, but I'm still not sure what's up with them at this point.

My predictions so far are off...BYU is crushing Pepperdine 18-9 but LMU and USD are tied at 17 in the first set.

LMU turned out to have a lot more fight in them than expected, taking USD to 5 sets today. Pepperdine had some squandered opportunities in their 4 set loss to BYU. Saint Mary's beat Gonzaga in 4 sets, with both teams hitting well under .200 for the match. Pacific vs Portland yet to come this evening.

First set: LMU 25 - 11 over Portland
Portland had a lot of trouble with LMU's serve. Geissberger went on like an 8-point serving run during the set. Also, 5 aces for LMU in the first set.
