The winner of tonight’s MAC showdown between MAC East and West leaders Bowling Green and Ball State will have the inside track on hosting the all important MAC tournament won by Ball State a year ago on the Cardinal campus. BSU enters tonight’s birdbath with the Falcons on a 9 match win streak while the Falcons split on the road last weekend at MAC West bottom feeder Eastern Michigan. Both teams enter tonight’s match in BG’s Stroh Center with a 9-2 record where the Falcons are undefeated in MAC play. Emotions will be sky high and you can likely flip a coin to decide the winner. Here are Kitten’s picks for Friday: Ball State over Bowling Green 3-2, Toledo over Miami 3-1, Ohio over Western Michigan 3-2, Buffalo over Eastern Michigan 3-1, Central Michigan over Akron 3-0, NIU over Kent State 3-2. quote]

Ball State stole the MACtion show with a monumental 3-0 win over MAC East leader Bowling Green Friday night in the Stroh Center. The win put the 10-2 Cardinals in the catbird seat for hosting the MAC tournament The Cardinals have now won 10 straight matches and controlled the Falcons (9-3) from start to finish. Kitten predicted every match correctly last night with the exception of Kent State’s sweep of Northern Illinois, dealing the Huskies a loss the drops NIU (7-5) into 4th place in the MAC West. Don’t look now but Ohio (8-3) is only a game behind Bowling in the MAC East, and if the Bobcats win their final 5 matches will host the MAC tournament! However, that’s a big if as OU must play MAC West leader Ball State and 2nd place Toledo twice to close the season. Ohio handed Western Michigan a critical loss defeating the Broncos 3-1 and dropping the WMU into 5th place in the MAC West. WMU is presently on the outside looking in at the MAC tournament. The hard charging Bulls of Buffalo (6-6) handled Eastern Michigan 3-1. Unfortunately the Eagles played without their star player Raven Chase. As of this moment, Buffalo has a spot in the 6 team MAC tournament. Toledo (8-4) defeated hapless Miami 3-1 to drop the RedHawks to 1-11. Central Michigan (8-4) took care of Akron 3-0 and are tied with Toledo for 2nd place in the MAC West. CMU still has an outside chance of winning the West as they hold the tie breaker over Ball State should the high flying Cardinals lose 2 more matches and CMU runs the table. Here are Kitten’s picks for Saturday. Ball State over Miami 3-0, Ohio over Northern Illinois 3-1, Bowling Green over Toledo 3-2, Akron over Eastern Michigan 3-2, Western Michigan over Kent State 3-2, Buffalo over Central Michigan 3-2.

And then there were 3! Ball State (11-2) holds a 1 game lead over (10-3) Bowling Green and Ohio with only 5 matches left to play for the right to host the grand daddy of them all- the MAC tournament! The Bobcats have the toughest schedule of the 3 having to play at Toledo (8-5) twice and host Ball State twice. The Cardinals host Kent State (3-10) tonight in the only MACtion match scheduled. Here is Kitten’s prediction for Thursday: Ball State over Kent State 3-0.

Thursday night went according to form as MAC West leader Ball State (12-2) swept Kent State (4-10) off their feet 3-0. It was the Cardinals 12th straight win after dropping their 1st two matches of the MAC season to Central Michigan. Full compliment of matches in the MAC this evening and the headliner is Ohio (10-3) at Toledo (8-5. The Bobcats are tied with Bowling Green for 1st in the MAC East and both school’s are 1 game behind Ball State in the loss column. Ohio is in a must win situation at Toledo if the Bobcats have any chance of hosting the MAC tournament. With this match being played in the Rockets Savage Arena, a real ding dong battle is expected. Here are Kitten’s picks for Friday. Toledo over Ohio 3-2, Ball State over Kent State 3-0, Bowling Green over Akron 3-0, Central Michigan over Northern Illinois 3-1, Western Michigan over Eastern Michigan 3-0, Buffalo over Miami 3-1.

Make that 13 in a row for BSU. (And Akron almost took out BGU, too).

Kitten hit on all 6 Friday night MACtion matches. Two matches stood out, Akron’s near shocking upset of MAC East leader Bowling Green. The MAC East bottom feeder Zips led BG 2-1 before falling 3-2 keeping the Falcons hopes alive of hosting the MAC tournament. The Falcons (11-3) trail Ball State (13-2) in the overall MAC standings. The other stunner was Toledo’s (9-5) easy 3-0 sweep over Ohio (10-4). The Bobcats must win their final 4 matches to have a chance of hosting the MAC tournament in the Convocation Center in Athens. In other matches Friday, Ball State easily extinguished the (4-11) Flashes of Kent State 3-0, Central Michigan (9-5) won a hard fought battle over Northern Illinois (7-7) by the score of 3-1. It was NIU’s alumni night where the 2013 MAC champion Huskies were honored on Victor E Court. Buffalo (8-6) took down hapless Miami (1-13) winning 3-1 in Millett Hall on the Miami campus. Western Michigan (7-7) had little difficulty sweeping Eastern Michigan (4-10) keeping the Broncos hopes alive for a birth in the 6 team MAC tournament. As this moment Ball State, Bowling Green, Ohio, Central Michigan, Toledo and Buffalo are the top 6 teams in the MAC that would make up the tournament. Only 4 matches remain for everyone except for BSU and KSU who have 3. Here are Kitten’s picks for Saturday: Bowling Green over Akron 3-0, Toledo over Ohio 3-2, Central Michigan over Northern Illinois 3-1, Western Michigan over Eastern Michigan 3-1, Buffalo over Miami 3-1.

With 3 matches remaining for each team in the MAC, 8 teams still have a shot at qualifying for the 6 team MAC tournament and 3 teams still have a chance to host the tournament. The 4 teams eliminated from the MAC tournament are Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Akron and Miami. The two teams on the outside looking in are 8-7 Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. Buffalo, Central Michigan and Toledo are tied for 4th place with records of 9-6. Ohio is in 3rd place at 11-4, Bowling Green holds down 2nd place at 12-3 and are a game behind defending MAC champion Ball State at 13-2. The Cardinals are flying high with a 13 match win streak. Believe it or not, Ohio could still host the MAC tournament with 2 wins against Ball State this weekend in the OU Convocation Center, coupled with a Buffalo two win sweep of Bowling Green in Buffalo. The stage is set for a wild weekend of MACtion! Here are Kitten’s picks for Friday: Ball State over Ohio 3-1, Buffalo over Bowling Green 3-2, Central Michigan over Western Michigan 3-2, Northern Illinois over Eastern Michigan 3-1, Toledo over Kent State 3-1, Akron over Miami 3-2.

MAC Breaking News! Bowling Green has moved into a 1st place tie with Ball State after BG won a thrilling come from behind 3-2 victory over Buffalo and BSU was dealt a 3-1 loss to Ohio (12-4). The Falcons and Cardinals are 13-3 with two matches remaining. BSU does hold the tie breaker over BG after defeating the Falcons twice earlier in the season. Two other scenarios could possibly unfold. If BG defeats Buffalo again tomorrow and Ohio wins again over BSU, BG wins the MAC and will host the tournament providing the Falcons win their final match of the regular season Wednesday. The final scenario would be if Buffalo defeats BG and Ohio takes down BSU again, there will be a 3 way tie for the MAC championship providing all 3 teams win their final matches next Wednesday. If all 3 win, a tie breaker system will determine who will host the all important MAC tournament.

Do you know how many MAC teams make the league tournament and what the tiebreakers are? I follow NIU as my third favorite team, and it looks like they may be in a logjam for a league tournament bid at this point.

It’s going to be a fight to the finish to determine who will be the 6 schools to qualify for the MAC tournament with only two matches remaining. Western Michigan (8-8) was dealt a huge blow by Central Michigan last night blowing a 2-0 lead to the Chippewas and being reverse swept. Coach Coleen “Big Money” Munson’s Bronco’s have their backs against the wall and must win tonight in their rematch with the Chips to have any hope of making the tournament. The remaining 7 still have a fighting chance. Locks at this point are Ball State (13-3), Bowling Green (13-3), Ohio (12-4, Toledo (10-6) and Central Michigan (10-6). On the bubble is Buffalo (9-7), Northern Illinois (9-7) and Western Michigan (8-8). Here are Kitten’s all important picks for Saturday: Buffalo over Bowling Green 3-2, Central Michigan over Western Michigan 3-1, Ball State over Ohio 3-2, Toledo over Kent State 3-1, Northern Illinois over Eastern Michigan 3-2, Miami over Akron 3-2.

The final matches of the MAC regular season will be played tonight as 7 teams remain in contention for the 6 team MAC tournament to decide the MAC representative to the NCAA tournament. Four very significant matches remain and possibly the most significant is Northern Illinois (10-7) at Western Michigan (8-9). A WMU win will likely knock DJ Ray Gooden’s Huskies out of the tournament giving the #6 seed to Buffalo. The Bulls (9-8) are heavily favored to defeat Akron (4-13). Ball State and Bowling Green are tied for the MAC lead at 14-3 and both should win tonight giving the Cardinals the all important tie breaker to host the MAC tournament. Central Michigan (11-6), Ohio (12-5) and Toledo (11-6) all have tournament bids locked up and will be seeded 3-5. Here are Kitten’s picks for Wednesday: Western Michigan over Northern Illinois Illinois 3-2, Bowling Green over Miami 3-1, Ball State over Toledo 3-1, Central Michigan over Eastern Michigan 3-1, Ohio over Kent State 3-1, Buffalo over Akron 3-1.

What are the tiebreakers beyond head-to-head? NIU and Buffalo split their regular season meetings (both winning 3-0, which is kind of wild), so I'm wondering what the next part of the tiebreak is? Couldn't find anything on the MAC website.

The final spot for the MAC Tournament is up for grabs between Northern Illinois (17-10, 10-7 MAC) and the Bulls. Both teams split their season series in sweeping fashion. With a win over the Zips and a Northern Illinois loss, the Bulls will take the sixth and final spot of the MAC Tournament. Buffalo would win the tiebreaker on division win percentage. The Bulls would finish 7-3 in the MAC East as Northern Illinois would finish 6-4 in the MAC West." ubbulls.com/news/2022/11/15/womens-volleyball-bulls-host-akron-to-close-out-regular-season.aspx
