Welcome to the 1st-Annual VolleyTalk Survival League!!!
How it works: -Every week, you pick 3 matchups between any two teams and choose the winner of each match. If they all win that week, you survive and move to the next week. Last one standing at the end of the season wins the title. Be aware that this is a season-long contest. Rules: -You cannot pick the same team to win a match twice (i.e. you can only pick Texas to win one of their matches over the season), but you can pick the same matchup twice (i.e. you could pick Nebraska over Ohio State on 9/24 and then Ohio State over Nebraska on 11/13, assuming you haven't picked them previously) -Must have your picks selected for the week by Mondays at the start of the first D1 scheduled match for the week, but for week 1, picks are due by Friday (8/26) at 9am CT-You pick 1 match wrongly, you're out, but if we don't get as many participants, we will switch to "2 strikes and you're out" -Must start to pick 5 teams starting week 8 if there are people still in the game -If your matchup gets cancelled due to Covid or weather, you will be exempt from that matchup but must pick additional matchup the following week if your other picks were successful -Weeks run from Monday-Sunday (week 1 is Friday 8/26 - Sunday 8/28) -If the 2 teams play each other twice in the same week, you will need to specify which date your pick is for. UPDATE: If we still have a large number of participants still in after week 9, I will increase the number of picks (and potentially for each of the last 4 weeks) to select to ensure we end the season with a winner.
UPDATE: If you miss a submission for a particular week (and are still in the competition = you haven't made an incorrect pick yet), you will have to make up those picks the following week. However, the max number of weeks you can miss is 3 weeks. For example, you can join the contest in week 4, but you'll have to make 12 picks that week and can't miss any other weeks, or else you'll be eliminated. Likewise, if you submit week 1, miss week 2, and submit again on week 3, then you'll have make 6 picks for week 3.
Picking a cancelled match or mistakenly picking a team that you've already picked won't count against you, but you'll have to make up that pick the following week. POST YOUR PICKS IN THIS THREAD AND I WILL TRACK EVERYONE'S PICKS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON. MAKE SURE TO INDICATE THE ENTIRE MATCHUP LIKE BELOW. IF THE TWO TEAMS PLAY TWICE IN THE SAME WEEK, YOU WILL NEED TO INCLUDE WHICH DATE YOUR PICK IS FOR. (ALSO INCLUDE TIME IF PLAYING TWICE IN SAME DAY)Example for week 1: Pepperdine over Tulsa Towson over Norfolk State Miami-FL over Bryant FAQs
- This will run through the end of the regular season? (Post season not included and conference tournaments included?) Yes, just through the end of the regular season- If a participant doesn’t submit in time then they are eliminated for the season? No. Each participant can miss 3 weeks during the season. However, whichever weeks you miss, you will have to make up those picks in the following week.- D1 matches only? Correct- Can we pick the same team to lose more than once? YesIf the last participants are all eliminated in the same week, the ones who missed the smallest number of picks will advance to the next week. TIEBREAKER Winning team picks reset for the NCAA tourney. (1) Select 8 of the 32 1st-round matches (when set) and pick a winner. If you survive, move on to #2.
(2) Select 2 of the 8 Sweet 16 matches (when set) and pick a winner. You cannot use a team that was picked in tiebreaker #1. If you survive, move to #3.
(3) Select 1 of the 4 Elite 8 matches (when set) and pick a winner. You cannot use a team that was picked in tiebreakers #1 or #2. If you survive, move on to #4.
(4) Select 1 of the 2 Final 4 matches (when set) and pick a winner. You cannot use any team previously picked in tiebreakers. If you survive, move on to #5.
(5) Choose the total combined points score for the championship match. Whoever is closest, wins. If there is a tie, the award will be shared.
Therefore, for the tiebreakers, you’d be picking a total of 12 winners, but none can be the same. If you have no options of teams left to pick, you will be eliminated. If the last standing are eliminated in the same tiebreaker, the person who misses the smallest percentage of picks in the tiebreaker will win. If multiple people miss the same percentage of picks, they will continue on to the next tiebreaker as the decider.
Note: if you skip weeks before the tiebreaker, you will have to increase your 1st round picks by 4 for each week missed leading up to the tiebreaker (i.e. if you miss week 14, you’ll have to choose 12/32 first round matches and pick correctly).

Can we pick the same team to lose more than once? I understand we can't pick them to win more than once. But can they be repeated if they are the losers?

Tracking "make up" matches sounds like extra detail work for you if we are unlucky. I am fine with just calling a cancellation a win and moving on. Anyone else?

Just to be clear, I could if I wanted, pick Rutgers to lose to Nebraska and the same week also pick them to lose to Purdue? And then 2 weeks later I could pick them to lose both of their games to Illinois and Ohio State? And on and on using the same team to lose as opposed to picking the winner? I could just stay in Jersey and pick any combo of FDU, NJIT, St peters and Rutgers if that were the case.

Of course, you have to pick 3 total matches and then 5 starting week 8, but yes you can keep picking a team to lose as long as the winner is different each time. Might need to re-evaluate that idea next year but that’s what we’ll go with for now.

Im hoping it won’t happen very often but it only seems fair that everyone picks the same number of cumulative matches. It won’t be much work for me either I don’t think.

Because you need more work to do and provide more entertainment for the VT community?? Working to maintain that 1st team status I see! Sure, I'll play. Let's start with the Pac 12 by alphabet. Arizona over Alabama State Arizona State over Cal State Bakersfield California over UC-San Diego Did I do that right?
