It's so pretty!
Great job, basil! I love that you put the VT ranking up there. Not because Texas is number 1, but because the poll is so important to the community. I know you normally do it, but I still think it's terrific.
So Ohio State with the edge at starting MB, setter, overall experience, and obviously home court. Plucky Texas trying to be the upstarts here. A group of no names coming together attempting to form a cohesive group. Almost like a Disney movie.

Under resourced, with hand me down jerseys, having to practice on a makeshift court outside surrounded by chain link fences. The volleyballs have to be reinflated after each practice rally. They hitch hiked all the way from Austin to Columbus. Caught a ride in a chicken coop truck coming back from the market for the last 100 miles. A Disney movie, I tell ya'.

It's a very interesting matchup
OSU with obviously a ton of continuity, 6 of 7 starters back and a ton of continuity with their DSs/role players/bench, their 3 freshmen are the only newcomers to a roster of 16. Texas...it's basically a new team from last year's with only 3 starters of their main 7 returning and only one other serving sub/backrow OH that saw major playing time. 10 of their 18 rostered players are new to the program this season.
on paper, I'd give the OH and L advantage to Texas, and I'd give OPP and S advantage to Ohio State. I'd also give Ohio State the slight edge at MB though I am unaware of how good their new middle Powell is. Rader is one of the best in the country. Texas is probably the better offensive team while Ohio State is a defensive grinder. Keys for Texas will be passing from their new libero and new outside to their new setter to feed their new middle. Gotta spread the ball around under pressure from both Ohio State and the crowd. I think Ohio State's success will key on their combined left side hitting percentage. In their biggest wins last year, their left sides were able to hit over .200 while in their losses they were well under .100. Gotta get Grunze and Gonzalez to pass well but also get easier swings instead of having to take out all the trash.
and then both teams get to do it again the next day!
Should be an electric environment and a fiery series, can't wait to watch it unfold.

I love this first test for Texas because I think tOSU is going to be very very good this season, and I generally root for them to knock off the B1G players that are fun to root against during conference play (cough) Nebraska and Wisconsin. I have them as my sleeper to finish their conference second, and while there are more obvious choices, I don’t think that’s crazy with all of their returning talent. I think Emily London will be back to her freshman dominance this season, and if she’s able to score at will, it could spell trouble. Ultimately, I think slowing her down is why Texas will go with a Skinner/Eggleston OH duo and a Phillips/Devin RS trade off between the two nights. Parra will find her way onto the court, but I don’t think they’ll chance her block being taken advantage of. I got called out at one point last season for saying I was high on Mac Podraza, don’t remember where or by whom, but I stand by that. Murr will Murr. Ultimately their experience going toe to toe with the B1G dogs will keep them cool under whatever Pressure Texas puts on them. With all that being said, and I know this is homer logic, Texas is too good and too deep at enough positions. I think it’ll be a battle with Texas coming in with the physicality from every position versus tOSU coming in with the chemistry and experience playing together. But I have faith the longhorns will click just enough to pull both matches out. Night one will be a 5-set slugfest. Night two will be an easier 3 or 4 set outing for the horns. Those are my predictions and I’m sticking to them. Either way, we’re in for some solid volleyball, and I’m excited to kick off the season against the Buckeyes.

Do not underestimate Murr at L. I know Fleck is Fleck but Murr is also amongst the best in the country.

Not directed towards you slxpress , more towards basil giving the edge on paper. Fleck is at the top of the NCAA libero heap, but the gap to Murr isn't that wide IMO. Fleck was such a huge get for Texas and clearly fills a critical hole. I'm super stoked for these matches. I voted Texas #1 and OSU #2 in my VT poll so in my mind, this is an opening weekend 1 vs. 2 matchup!

Replacing Arica Davis at middle will be key for Ohio State if they hope to hold Kayla Caffey to .143 hitting, as they have the last two seasons.
