Now that that annual brawl is over I can go back to rooting for the Jesuits in the regular season (which includes Creighton). May we not meet again. LOL! I snorted just a little...

This is one of those games that shows the importance of having had those big game moments. When the going got tough, it was the vets from last year with big plays: Robinson, Orzol, Demps. Orzol was otherworldly with some of those digs.

As I said mid second set, do we Wisconsin fans tend to underplay or just take for granted how good Robinson is, regardless of where she is playing? We shouldn't, but we may!

Glad we got the win. Fun match to watch. The Field House was really loud to start the game. Great student section tonight. Hope that keeps up all season.
A few observations from tonight's match: Robinson is a stud. They need to find a way to have her get the ball more. Good things happen when she is set. I think RS is the best spot for her because she gets more swings than she would in the middle. She was a difference maker tonight. Orzel looks like she's taken more of a leadership role on the court. More demonstrative. She had more firepower tonight than last year too. Solid. She played well and was part of the pulling away at the end of the first set and had several great plays to turn around the 3rd set. Big game for her. Our passing was downright awful at points tonight. It needs to improve. Good news is, it will be hard for it not to improve. The setters were running a lot tonight. I know what I would have the team practice all week if I were Sheffield. :-o GG settled down after a rough start to the match. Passing and defense both improved. Rough start. Demps is too good not to play. Sheffield needs to figure out how to get her more involved. Not surprising the match turned around once she got in there. Need to find a good way for her to play consistently. Smrek is a phenomenal blocker. She hits better out of MB than RS. She's not a good OOS option. She struggles with that. I love her offense in the middle. I think they need to run that a little more. Crawford was fun to watch. A good all around player. Nice serves. She was the only player on the team that would take the 2nd contact (when the Setter took 1st contact) with her hands. She set well for a MB. Loved her energy too. I'm spoiled watching Carlini and then Hilley for 9 years. MJ struggled tonight. Her timing was off and her set location could have been better. The offense definitely ran better when Ashburn set. So much so I thought Sheffield would switch to a 5-1 in the 3rd set (he didn't). Ashburn looked really good. I'd like to see her in the front row to understand if her blocking would be a liability or if it would be OK. Definitely the offense ran better with Ashburn. Considerably so. I wonder if practice is different? I read a lot about GG's serve being poor. It wasn't spectacular, but she had some good short serves and then some floats down the line. I guess I was expecting worse after reading about it. It was fine. Our 2nd contact (when setter takes 1st) is still just OK. I wish GG had confidence in her hands to hand set it. As a hitter, I much preferred hand sets to bump sets. The bump set location was pretty good, but they were quite high and the defense was well positioned for our OOS attack. I miss Courtney Thomas taking 2nd contact. So nice to see Hart back out on the court. This team is going to have some growing pains as it develops its identity. TONS of talent on the roster. They need to play together for a while. The defense seemed tentative at times. They seemed to struggle with some of MJ's sets. They need to settle down the passing. Get Demps in there too. Just need some more repetition. Lots of potential.
The opening ceremony with the rings and the banner gave me chills. What a special season last season was. So many amazing memories. Thank you Badgers!!

I was hoping we'd run a 5-1 this season and Hammill would be balling out.
She is definitely struggling with accuracy and even doesn't seem to have the range/athleticism that Izzy does. Maybe it's all those protein drinks and she's a little too bulked up?

I have not posted this, but I do think the 6-2 has a ton to deal with the hitter depth, which Demps coming off the bench to play a huge role in a win does tend to support, I think!

I usually don't comment on players' appearance, but...is it my imagination?...has Demps lost weight and gotten in better shape? She seemed to be in a changed body last evening (and I have not watched her particularly since December).

First-timer Grace Loberg was decent in her first stint as color commentator. Her voice is not the strongest, but I liked her insights. She seems like a classy, thoughtful person. Speaking of classy, I liked Sheffield's post-game line to the other commentator about sitting next to a great human being in Grace. I'm a big admirer of Sheffield...quite possibly the most well-liked coach in the game (and who also seems like a great human being). This coming from a Gopher volleyball fan who also greatly admires McCutcheon.

Madden, please stop trolling. There are teams I don't like but I then I just avoid their match and team threads. Just stop.

As I said mid second set, do we Wisconsin fans tend to underplay or just take for granted how good Robinson is, regardless of where she is playing? We shouldn't, but we may! I think there's an element of being undercovered media wise having come in in the midst of the Rettke/Hilley era; the coverage tended to focus on those players and she didn't get the press that she likely should have. I imagine that will start to change as everyone adapts to the new team sans those players.

Just rewatched the match. I feel like they need to keep the Demps option in back for Franklin.

Just rewatched the match. I feel like they need to keep the Demps option in back for Franklin. That pushes you up to six subs per full six position rotation. Sheffield has in the past not shied away from using that many subs, but there WILL be sets when you run out, and you have to have a "plan B" and "plan C" ready for the end of those sets.
