Ok, so Franklin didn’t have a great match. She still had a double double. Demps did what she did extremely well last year. Smrek and Julia were solid. Hart is looking like she’ll be as good as she was before she tore her acl once she is full strength. Those are all good things. Setters looked to be more comfortable and in the flow than previously. Defense looked good against hard swings. Seems like we need to communicate a lot better and understand responsibilities better against off speed. I agree about Franklin... but what I did like she got better throughout the match.... there were some pinpoint passes she made that were next level. That one kill out of the back row was lethal. Never have we had an attacker out of the backrow (besides Demps) that can smash the crap out of the ball. Legit set by Smrek.

Just rewatched the match. I feel like they need to keep the Demps option in back for Franklin. That pushes you up to six subs per full six position rotation. Sheffield has in the past not shied away from using that many subs, but there WILL be sets when you run out, and you have to have a "plan B" and "plan C" ready for the end of those sets. Plan B being 'we're out of subs so now we are back running a 5-1'. Which, if you are willing to run a 5-1 late in most competitive sets, then that's fine. But that also means that Robinson (or Smrek, which seems like the longer shot) has to be ready to be a 6 rotation opposite when you run out of subs. And if she's not, then we need a player that would sub in who IS ready to be a 6 rotation opposite. This would be fine normally, because Demps in fact is a fine 6 rotation opposite. Except that if you are subbing her in for Franklin, you are no longer allowed to sub her in for an opposite (since you can can't play one rotational slot, then sub out and come back into a different rotational slot, unless you're the libero). So Demps as a DS for Franklin leaves us with a 6 rotation Devyn Robinson at opposite once we're in our third time around. Since opposites are typically the worst back court defenders and the 5-1 allows for that, it's not a disaster, and maybe Robinson's floor defense is good. But if not, I don't like the plan.

Well, the thing about that sub is that is not an essential one. You can chose to do it or not to do it. I still would like to see Demps pass for an extended period. I need to be convinced she can do that, or that the badgers can pass well with two. My takeaway from last night is that Orzol is an incredibly important player for the badgers.

I still think the 3 Middle Offense in a 5-1 would be scary! Hart/Crawford and Robinson can move around an attack behind the setter ball.
Orzol is incredible... as I said before, and I was knocked for it last season, she is one of the best Liberos in the world... if she only had to focus on serving and being Libero, wow... she would be lights out. Her court awareness, her floor defense and her chemistry with teammates.... I love that kid!

SMREK stays put in the middle, once setter(s) can figure her out, that she needs a 1 1/2 bal, she is unstoppable. -- Hart and Crawford can fight it out... Robinson is too good at Middle and RS ---
