I had to leave after the second set. Oh boy. Have no idea what to think of MN now. What's the rundown of what happened - what worked, what didn't? Was Pepperdine playing well? Pepp was 1000% better OOS and passed dimes on the MN 8th grade serves.

I missed the blown call at set point in the third and just saw it on the replay.
That was horrifying.

I'll tell you, it didn't look a toss up on the floor. Gophers win a deuce set, then get outscored by 15 the rest of the way. Good point. Mainly targeted at the VT pollsters who've been hesitant to put Pepperdine in their top 16 (for what reason I have no idea). Losing to Northwestern.

Losing to a good Northwestern team while playing their 3rd match in 24 hours after defeating Washington in 4 just 6 hours prior? Not a good enough reason.

First, Pepperdine is a really good team, better than 22. I agree that Minnesota is still playing with its lineup and trying to find a rhythem. I still think they will have a great season despite these two recent losses. Go Gophers. Pepperdine is good, but Minnesota didn't have answers that other teams have had. Example: Hellmuth hit .147 in Pepperdine's first seven matches, then hits .516 on 21 for 31 with 5 errors against Minnesota.

Wurcherer struggled at first but had a run in the 4th that brought Minny to within one. Then the passing started going awry again. Wucherer actually came out on fire. She put down her first four kill attempts.

So by the transitive property Northwestern is supreme!!!!!! And not just with those teams, but (an "own goal" coming here from a Badger fan) Northwestern > Pepperdine > Minnesota > Baylor > Wisconsin. LOL Of course, these crazy transitive chains can be constructed in any sport in any year, but this year, besides Texas, might there actually be increased parity in women's volleyball?

Seems like a team would have to be pretty good to sweep the waves...

Some Gopher post match thoughts as I was able to view this beauty in person. Also I’m not going to try to censor my comments or sway it as overly positive or overly negative if the on court product doesn’t warrant it. I also won’t make any declarations on what this team can or cannot be by seasons end. There’s alot of volleyball left to be played and alot of practices ahead to keep developing in certain areas. 1) There is plenty of blame to go around. This doesn’t fall on any one or two players. It was generally the whole team. The pride factor and underlying hunger / disdain for losing seems to be lacking in a big way 2) Kilkelly has really stepped up her game as of late and was a bright spot tonight. So happy for a great kid! 3) Wucherer took some healthy rips tonight and hit some spots well. Her blocking was getting used, but so was everyone else’s on the team. Besides that I thought she had a nice debut! 4) The passing continues to be bad. Makes it impossible to accomplish anything with passing this sporadic. 5) Mel continues to have consistency problems with her set tempo and location and the decision making hasn’t been sharp either. It shuts down a lot of offensive opportunities that could’ve been possible and blockers are able to read her quickly and get to their spot an extra half second early since she tips her set choices. 6) As for Landfair, I’ll put the level of inspiration she plays with or whatever to the side as everyone has different on court temperaments. That’s fine. Purely from a mechanics / hitting standpoint, Landfair makes hitting (even on the good sets she gets) look harder than it actually is for being 6’5 on a women’s height net where you are already given a giant advantage as is. She plays stiff, doesn’t get any bend in her legs when she jumps which makes it extremely hard to come even close to optimizing your jumping abilities as an attacker, and her torso rotation is very limited. She is a predictable hitter as she never seems to use a line shot and has a hitting radius ranging from the middle of zone 6 to the back end of zone 4 which makes it so much easier for opposing blockers and liberos to handle their assignments on her. As for the out of system stuff she does… I’ll leave it at that. She has loads of potential that she’s not even beginning to take advantage of. 7) The defense, tip coverage, and overall scrappiness is alarming and after more than a handful of years of the same thing, this ultimately falls on the coaching staff. Their base defense has them out of position in a lot of scenarios. Something has to change here. 8) Wenaas has a distinct ceiling as a player. Has she played below her standards thus far this season? Yes. Has she been the recipient of more than a fair share of bad sets? Yes. Do I expect her to find a groove down the stretch? Also yes. She will never be exceptionally strong in any one area of the game against elite competition but she’s got tools that she can use to help contribute to winning volleyball. Let’s hope she pulls things together soon. A quick turnaround in her play wouldn’t shock me at all. 9) Some very dysfunctional play as of late but the sky is not falling. Things should return to equilibrium at some point and a couple of losses in preseason don’t make or break a season. Lots of big matches coming up to be won.

Minnesota needs a few more competitions to iron things out. Thing is, though, a week from now, you're getting ready for conference matches. (And this goes for all them - Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc) Time is almost up. Yes, its unfortunate. Minnesota will probably have another bad loss or two. But the tournament doesn't start until December.
