Northwestern match, points by server by set: Izzy on the court: 10-12, 11-8, 14-14; total 35-34 MJ on the court: 15-6, 14-11, 11-8; total 40-25 ----------- Points scored during the serve of server: Izzy: 6 points on 7 trips to the line Orzol: 2 points on 7 trips GG: 2 points on 7 trips MJ: 10 points on 6 trips Franklin: 7 points on 7 trips Liz G: 1 point on 4 trips CC: 6 points on only 2 trips ----------- Sideout percents by server for the year (taking out High Point, Campbell, Rhode Island; lower number the better) Izzy: 0.557 Orzol: 0. 679 GG: 0.547 MJ: 0.485 Franklin: 0.644 Liz G: 0.750 CC: 0.538 The numbers sure do seem to back up what I saw, that MJ was having a much better match than Izzy tonight. The serving certainly helped her out a lot too. Any idea why Liz was serving for CC early on, instead of serving for Franklin? Seemed like CC was serving fine, getting some nice scoring runs. I meant to post at the UW thread, to not clutter up a thread that 'belongs' to both schools/teams. But I wasn't quick enough deleting it. I'll post it over there, as well; it belongs there.

They need to put more TV monitors in the East Concourse. The line for Dippin’ Dots is almost halfway to Bucky’s Locker Room. They need to put some small monitors in under the upper deck for those of us way in the back. They don’t need to be huge, just enough to be able to see stats and replays. We have to duck down to see the scoreboard! I’d be fine with them completely getting rid of dipping dots though. It’s all my kids want when they get to go to matches! Are you the one that camps out in Section 0 with the whole little nest of kid stuff near where the Big gap behind the seats is? It's pretty funny?

Is that gap you’re talking about under the stairs to the upper deck?

How many times does Demps have to bail out Franklin before she just gets the start? This is absurd She can't pass or block

Smrek and Franklin combined for 6k-10E-32TA. -0.125 The rest of the badgers. 35k-4E-63TA. 0.492 This is abysmal, Sheffield

what's going on with Smrek? she was so dominant in the final 4, and all of a sudden she appears average. sorry if there's an obvious answer (injury?). i don't get to watch that often. other teams covered Rettke leaving Smrek wide open. She's playing about the same as she did at the beginning of last season. But we're also not setting her in the middle, like ever.

How do you go from NCAA Championship top scorer and MVP to sitting most of a match. sure Rettke made a difference, but other teams have plenty of hitters to cover other than Smrek.

Smrek is hitting .118 on the season Demps is hitting .278 Robinson .323 Hell, even Wrobel's .308 on 13 attempts is more promising At this point it's criminal to put Smrek on the court.

Sheffield was pretty clear at the beginning of the season that Smrek had a lot to get better at. She isn't seeing the block right now that well, often hitting into it. She is hitting long and wide a lot when she avoids it. Sheff does not like his hitters making that many errors. He has a ready sub who is experienced and can do a good job, and was in fact an improvement over Smrek last night.
It's possible it's just a setting issue. I'd guess they are working through different elements of the offense one at a time. As Sheffield has said they always start by getting the fundamentals of the offense down with reps, and then moving on to more complex things. It may be that integrating Smrek is a tougher nut to crack for Hammill and Ashburn. They may be setting her like she is one of the other attackers so she can't use the full advantage of her height. It may take a while for the setters to get the that right, but I think they will figure it out.
Rettke didn't have the hops that Smrek does, but she was quicker across the floor and that created space in the block. Rettke was also great at managing sets that weren't ideal. She got a lot of those.
Franklin he can't readily sub because she is a main passer. If she were to really flub her passing AND attacking, Sheff might sub Demps for Franklin as he did against Marquette. But I really think they are committed to this set of three passers figuring it out it out in the backrow, and leaving the option open of subbing them when things get too rough by holding Demps and Wrobel in reserve. It will be interesting to see what happens when Bramschreiber comes in.

Not Smrek's level, but decent enough that the badgers don't lose that much.

Like I said earlier, Smrek is playing at the exact same level she was last season. She had a breakout post-season.

From what I have seen this season, Smrek hit over 500 in the middle, and negative from the right. I don't have the numbers, but this comes from my observing memory. From my point of view, Smrek isn't correctly utilized.
When she moves back to the middle position after Hart leaves, she will be our MVP next 2 seasons. Mark my words.
