I remember the New York Times had an article on JWO. I was pretty surprised since national media hardly ever paid attention to volleyball, especially its national volleyball team.

Wait two days for the next match, then wait another three? A whole mess! I could stand waiting a rest day between matches, but really? Ah, the wonders of FIVB's inexplicable scheduling. A real challenge to figure out why they do it that way.

The team now needs to travel to Poland for the remaining pool matches. This whole co-host thing seems stupid. Why not just play all the pool matches in one city and then move to the next for the second round?

Team Canada.
Winzer trains and coaches under the philosophy that this group has the skills, just not the experience or mental fortitude. That's why her practices and time-outs consist of fairly empty platitudes. She thinks the outsides can just fix everything by hitting high hands.
There's a large component of staff and coaches that disagree; and think we simply don't have the necessary passing ability to compete. Many of the athletes hated Abbondolla but IMO, he was right, they literally just need passing reps until they hate themselves.
For this current group, Mitrovic and Howe are both not the answer. They are too similar of players, and Winzer is banking on both (particularly Howe) of their "potential" to blossom. If Canada wants to progress as a nation we need some success and to affirm to the core girls that there is success to be had here and that they need to stay on the team (Maglio, King, Gray, Murmann). IMO Livingston can fill that passing/defensive OH2 role that Autumn left us.
Edit: to add, I think the girls do like Winzer as a person, and in kind buy-in to her words. Leadership (Cross) really makes it an effort to make sure everyone stays on board. I think this is a double edged sword as it's going to keep Team Canada from progressing. We need some fight-back (in practice, behind closed doors, not for all of Volleytalk to see).
Edit2: VC also specifically hired Winzer because they know she'll be on board, for cheap, for a very long time. As much as we want want the team to do well, stability is also a huge issue with Volleyball Canada right now.
I will agree completely that the team needs a lot of passing reps (whether the players like it or not). It's interesting that you know why Winzer's "practices and time-outs consist of empty platitudes". I think she is filled with "empty platitudes" because she doesn't know her stuff from a technical standpoint. She does not know how to coach at this level. Some of the retired players didn't like Abbondanza, I think, because the younger players were getting more opportunity and he actually worked and trained the team hard. The younger players like Van Ryk, Maglio, Veltman, and Bailey, liked Abbondanza (or we wouldn't see both Van Ryk and Maglio signing on to play with him this year and Van Ryk for the third time as a pro). I believe there are players who want to practice as hard as possible and learn as much as they can so they can get better. There are players who would love to qualify for the Olympics (which is becoming a longer and longer shot at this point). What is unfortunate is that the louder voices seemed to convince VC to not extend Abbondanza's contract and long-term hired a cheaper, less experienced coach who, perhaps, a few players can have more of a say in how things are run. As a person, Winzer may not be completely disliked by the whole team, but I don't believe she is respected either. I think players are starting to get frustrated and I expect that we will see many players leave the team after next year if the team does not qualify for the Olympics. If VC is smart, they will step in NOW and hire a good coach (like so many of the top teams have done - Serbia, Poland, etc.). They will not be successful with Winzer as a coach and we will continually see an exodus of players. You cannot keep a program relevant if all your top players leave every few years. Winzer really needs to go now. We'll miss her Winzerlations, but that's about it. VC has proven they’re are not smart so it would be wishful thinking that they would terminate Winzer’s contract. The exodus of players should have happened after two events that Winzer was at the helm (more than likely just one event but I will cut them some slack there). Many are here for a third go under Winzer’s “guidance” — those players are getting what they deserve. If it’s obvious that she will remain then nobody can feel sorry for anyone who continues to put their head in that noose so to speak. I see they got close in one set tonight and I hope that zero of them are happy about that. I may be wrong but it seems results are meeting expections (and possibly vice versa).

I missed the game how much of a beatdown was it haven’t yet seen the match but was 19, 24 and 15. Second set score might indicate some good play by Canada but maybe not either …. will have to check it out. A break now for Canada before Kaz so here’s hoping it’s a 3 match win streak ahead 😁

They also really struggle hitting against the block, almost everything that gets touched turns into a free ball instead of going out, if its not kill-blocked. You might have some success there.

If we can actually get some decent, consistent passing then it should be okay. If not, it might be a coin flip

You have zero understanding of what it means to be an athlete at a high level much less part of a team.
