Anyone else watch Horizon league much?? I moved out to Green Bay recently so will probably get into it… freshman setter for Cleveland State seems to have a lot of potential!

I loosely follow my local team Oakland U and try to catch at least one match every season. The HL tournament is always fun and competitive with a trip to the NCAA's on the line. There are some nice players to watch, I love Wright State's setter Lainey Stephenson; and Paula Gursching from YSU is a crazy good ball banger. Paalman and Gromos are really solid players for Green Bay.

Wright State continues to roll (9-0). NKU seems to have found some rhythm and Green Bay recovered from a surprising loss at home last week to Oakland. Surprising only because it was at home and Oakland's record compared to GB. Oakland seems to be hot and cold based on results. Not sure what has happened to Milwaukee this season with losses to Wright State, GB, NKU and IUPUI - the IUPUI is the only surprise as I would think they are evenly matched with the others- but losing to all three of the others is a surprise.
The second round of conference play should be interesting - WSU and NKU goes on the road to GB and MKE and NKU visits to WSU for a midweek matchup early November. Obviously, this is a one bid league this year with the automatic going to the Conf Tourney winner, not the regular season league winner. The only gain from winning the league is getting to host the tournament. Should be interesting finish.

WSU shut down Gursching - she ended with 10 kills but hit .000 (I thinkg) makes me wonder who else YSU has played that she has put up the big numbers she has over this season. I really liked #2 for YSU - setter/hitter which is rare these days - she was very athletic and fun to watch. WSU is solid all around - senior and super senior roster with some role playing from under classmen. Stephenson and Story are 5th years and fun to watch. #15 for WSU had a good night on the pin.

Was so disappointed to see this on social media. Stats for Setter of the Year, sure lock for first team all-conference, chasing first place on all time assists, and team on an undefeated streak among the longest in the nation. Apparently this happened Saturday in Milwaukee. Team has a tough match against second place NKU tomorrow night. My understanding is Stephenson has been the starting 5/1 setter for 5 seasons. Two other setters on the roster with Meyer (Sr) getting the nod after Stephenson went down. http://instagram.com/p/CkWiGssppl_

Wright State wins in 5 against second place Northern Kentucky University last night. This extends Wright State’s winning streak to 17 - a program record as they continue to lead the Horizon League.

Entering the final week of league play and Wright State has clinched the regular season title and will host the HL Championships as the #1 seed. NKU will be second seed - both will receive a first round bye.
Green Bay will be the 3 seed and will play the 6 seed in the first round. Teams in positions 4,5,6 are unclear and will depend on the results of the final weekend. In the running are Milwaukee, Youngstown, Cleveland and Oakland.
I predict Cleveland goes 2-0 this weekend and slides into third place. Milwaukee has one match left vs Green Bay and with a win will have the same record as Cleveland, but Cleveland wins the *tie breaker. Green Bay will be a tough win for Milwaukee though.
Youngstown plays host to NKU and Wright State this weekend and should end with a 8-10 record which puts them in as the 6th seed. However, if Oakland wins both they also end up 8-10 and they win the *tie breaker with Youngstown to earn the 6 seed.
**based on how I understand tie breakers to work

Wright State and NKU swept both matches over the weekend to hold their 1st and 2nd place in league and secure the first round bye.
Green Bay defeated Milwaukee in three close sets, securing third place while Milwaukee dropped to 5th.
Cleveland State places 4th in what has to be the surprise of the season. They were picked 7th pre season and had a strong second round of league play. I attribute this to their freshmen, who they rely on pretty heavily, getting some experience and playing at a higher level.
Rounding out the tournament with a 6th place finish is Youngstown. They also were a surprise finish after being picked 9th in pre season. They ride or die on OH Paula Gorshing and OPP/S Josi Borum - neither of which played in the regular season finale yesterday versus Wright State. No explanation given as far as I know.
(I wish I knew how to insert a photo of the bracket, but I don’t.)
Friday Green Bay vs Youngstown Cleveland State vs Milwaukee
Saturday (my prediction) Wright State vs Cleveland State NKU vs Green Bay
Sunday (my prediction) Wright State vs Green Bay
And for no other reason than Wright State is without all league setter and 5th year starter, Stephenson and also because it is hard to beat a good team three times - I predict Green Bay the tournament champion.

Paula is nursing an injury from what I understand. I do not know what that will mean for Friday, probably too early to tell. I am unsure why Josi did not play.

horizonleague.org/news/2022/11/16/cross-country-horizon-league-unveils-2022-hlvb-awards.aspxThe league announced awards today. Offensive POY and Overall POY Paula Gorsching (So) - Youngstown - will she be recovered from her injury to play in the tournament that starts tomorrow? Happy to see a 6 rotation player get this award as she brings it front row and back row. Nice player to watch. Defensive POY - Jenna Story (5th) - Wright State - 4-time recipient and an all-around back row stud Setter of the Year - Lainey Stephenson (5th) - Wright State - suffered career ending injury with 4/5 league matches left, well deserved honor and glad the coaches/league still recognized her. 2-time recipient of the award Freshman of the Year - Laken Voss (Fr) - Cleveland State - had a great inaugural season and played 6 rotations. She developed as the season progressed and was deserving of this honor. Cleveland State is a young team, will be one to watch for the coming years. Coach of the Year - Trav Green (1st season) = Wright State - inherited a great roster but had some holes to fill...undefeated in conference play - well earned by him and his staff. The rest of the recipients can be seen at the link above. Tournament starts tomorrow. I predict Raiders are gonna roll to another title and NCAA birth.

So far so good… Took a minute for Green Bay to get going as they dropped the first set, before cruising the next three. Zakutney is very good for them. Cleveland state made easy work of a sloppy Milwaukee team. Complete contrast in terms of energy and chemistry with CSU looking like giant killers out there having a good time and Milwaukee the complete opposite. Wright St vs Cleveland 3:00 NKU vs Green Bay 6:00

#1 Wright State will take on #2 Northern Kentucky tomorrow. Wright State defeated Cleveland State in 4 Northern Kentucky defeated Green Bay in 3 Green Bay didn’t have their best tournament. Really like Zakutney. Offense struggled outside of her. Cleveland state is young and hungry. Wright State just overwhelmed them at times. Crowd energy seemed to help and had to be a factor in CSU younger players heads. Future is bright for CSU. Today’s matchup between Wright State and NKU is one I will see in person. Two great teams and two great programs the last few years. It’s a toss up and I can’t even begin to make a prediction. Hoping for a great match and may the best team win.
