www.gazzetta.it/Volley/15-10-2022/volley-mondiali-egonu-choc-mia-ultima-nazionale-mi-hanno-chiesto-se-fossi-italiana-450651355568.shtmlEgonu shock: "It's my last on the national team. They asked me why I was Italian." Then explains... Very harsh outburst of the blue player in tears after the success against the United States The outburst came at the end of the match, along with tears. Italy had just clinched the bronze medal at the Volleyball World Cup when Paola Egonu, Italy's strongest player and one of the strongest in the world, approached the sidelines and turned to her attorney, Marco Raguzzoni, who also manages coach Davide Mazzanti. After the 3-0 victory in the 3rd/4th place final at the Women's Volleyball World Cup against the U.S., Paola Egonu vents, in tears, to her prosecutor and is filmed by a fan on the sidelines. "You cannot understand, they also asked me why I was Italian. This is my last game in the national team, I'm tired. You can't understand." Watch the video (Twitter: @whatsupban) "You can't understand, you can't understand. It's my last in the national team. They asked me why I was Italian.... I'm tired." All caught on video. It's a few words, but terrible when you consider the value of the player who uttered it. A case that was in the air and that we had anticipated today, telling about the possible Italvolley revolution: away coach Mazzanti along with Egonu? Minutes pass, the azzurre are rewarded and Egonu returns to the Rai microphones, but this time the tones are different: "I am very tired now, I could take a break from the national team, I am not saying, however, to leave it."

I lived in Italy during college. This was (more than) a few years ago, but that place is racist AF. I wish the best for Egonu and support her 100% if she wants to say screw it and go live and play somewhere that appreciates her. Which place? Man, I'm the less patriotic person in my country, but somebody here is describing Italy like it's Germany 1938, lol.

This sucks for Egonu. I wonder if that was one of the reasons DaGennaro was hugging her after the victory. She deserves a long break from the national team if it's causing her more mental anguish than bringing her joy. Racism sucks.

This friends is why racism is still a thing. Trying to belittle how people feel. I'm not sure if you have ever felt racism, but it takes a lot out of you mentally. I was just in Italy last summer for the first time and as a man of color I was discriminated against.

Also my problem with karch is still not solved. Players have bad games. Make changes… Poulter should have been subbed in if not injuried just like she should have been subbed out in other matches. Washington should have been out matches ago. Our block is really bad. Correct, if he'd consistently make the right changes at the right times then over time it'd be more clear what the best options are for all future times (starting and in-game changes). If you leave in people who are sucking, and then occasionally put in others (and then they happen to suck that one time) then you really don't know what you're doing or what you have.

imagine being more mad at the victim of racism than the actual racists. They’re millions of black girls, minorities and lgbt that need positive role models like her. Walking away paints a grim picture for those said girls future. I don’t like the message it send to them.

I feel bad for Egonu. She chose Vakifbank... she will have to live under oppression again theres plenty of black players in Turkey and one of their most popular players is openly gay. Theres a few isolated chatter on the internet but youre really exaggerating here.

I would imagine its similar to Nebraska 2022 (unfortunately)

I feel bad for Egonu. She chose Vakifbank... she will have to live under oppression again Turkey will change governments to a progressive, secular and left wing one according to all polls next year. Istanbul is a very international city and VakifBank is a very elite and well organized club, she will have a blast I'm sure. Turkish people LOVE to hype up their black players unlike in Italy, even in the Ottoman Empire, which Turkey is the successor of, ''black people'' or ''asians'' were a regular part of the common folk so the white supremacy culture never made it here, thus it never became a cultural problem here. We do and did have ethnic clashes but it's not race based.

We do and did have ethnic clashes but it's not race based. changing governments doesnt change the people though….and this type of thing comes from a small number of people, not the established mainstream majority of any country. So this isnt really that relevant. Also vakifbank allegedly has questionable financial ties to the current government, which is very invested in sport.
