On the year Izzy and MJ lineups have actually been scoring at similar rate. Shocking because the eye test definitely makes it seem like Izzy is much better (her defense appears to be better and her sets are way cleaner), but stats say otherwise. Someone posted it in Badger topic. So it was likely just a bad day for Hammill. That being said, Kelly has switched to a 5-1 with Izzy before mid match (forgot which one) so I think if push comes to shove, that is the out, but being able to put up 3 hitters/blockers at all times seems like the current goal at the moment. On the season Izzy is averaging around 2 assists more per set than MJ. You can explain a single game by runs or if one setter is digging a lot more than the other. But over the course of an entire season that's a big difference especially when both setters have similar digging numbers. On the year, Izzy is also simply on the floor more than MJ. Including last night, I have it at Izzy on the floor for a total of 930 total points in B1G matches, and MJ on the floor for 795 total points. A difference of 135 points, or over 11 matches about 12 points per match. Now, that can happen for a couple reasons: if "Izzy's team" is being sided out less quickly, she'll stay on the floor for more points. And I'm sure that part of the difference. But it is more a consequence of how the rotation is set up in the first place. When UW losses the coin flip and has to serve first, Izzy is the first to serve, and so gets the first three rotations across the back row; if UW wins the coin flip and receives the first serve, Izzy is on the floor for the first 'two and a half' rotations. Either way, Izzy gets the chance at 'extra' turns setting. Either Izzy gets more rotations, or the number of rotations on the floor are equal; there is no circumstance (unless they revert to a 5-1 at the end of a close set, and MJ is the setter) when MJ gets more rotations on the floor.

If we struggle to do that, then it's an argument for going back to the 5-1 with Izzy and just concentrating on siding out rotations 4-6 on the initial reception (eliminating concerns about blocking weaknesses). The best thing for our system is to stick to our guns, and not keep changing it up from match to match like it seems like Cook has done. Changing to a 5-1 is a good way to ruin MJ’s confidence and make the whole situation worse, like it seems to have done to Orr. Wholeheartedly agree. One of the reasons I love coach Sheffield and dislike coach Cook is how Sheffield doesn't throw his own players under the bus, unlike John Cook. I'm like 98% confident that the UW coaching staff will simply look at the tape and have MJ work more reps improving her connection with Smrek & Orjol. That was lacking, so improve it and move on.

MJ is solid. She's smart. I have every confidence that she's gonna hit the film hard and make the necessary adjustments. The downside of a 6-2 is that you have two setters each of which can have a bad match. The upside of a 6-2 is that you have two setters each of which can have a good match. Badgers just swept the #1 ranked team, supposedly without a setter for half the rotations if we take comments on this board seriously. Imagine how good they can be if they can get better than last night by getting more consistency from both setters?

What's with Orr anyway? Why is she not playing? Is Cook trying to get her to transfer? She looks miserable on the bench!!! She's looked pretty bad when she was out there. Not just the doubles but the set location and choices. A few games ago she literally set the ball over the net. Not on a dig. On a set. I've never seen that before at this level. I didn't even know an overset was a thing. Plus she is really bad in back right D which doesn't work well in a 6-2. She is a big block if she was running a 5-1 but her setting is way behind. It's terrible she has this mental block but she's a liability right now. It’s too bad since she came in with so much potential. Does NE have another setter coming in next year? I’m sure they could get an elite one from the portal.

They'll get Bergen Reilly, one of the top setters in the 2023 class.

Everyone wanted this to work for her. The likelihood of her transferring is high, and that's a drag. Bergan Reilly, who filled in for the USA Volleyball senior national team at the Pan American Cup Final Six this year, joins the team in 2023.

Imagine how good they can be if they can get better than last night by getting more consistency from both setters? We mostly dominated what was supposed to be one of the best teams in the country last night, with a previous Tournament MVP hardly seeing any action, one setter having a rough night, and one of our steadiest OH’s having a rough night. If those three can get it together by the end of the regular season and play consistently well, the ceiling is QUITE high for what they could accomplish this year.

From the stands, it looks like a general location problem at times with Hammill - too close to/far from the net, behind the hitter, etc....which is hard to understand...so, is that a COMMUNICATION problem? not enough REPS with a certain hitter? or just poor (location) setting?

Usual caveat, I'm just back from the Field House and have not read the 4000 pages of comments... ... but a question for the Husker fans: is there any circumstance whatsoever where pulling Knuckles out of serve-receive and replacing her with Batenhorst makes sense? Yes, Batenhorst and Knuckles sub one another. Yes, Knuckles was struggling. But Batenhorst is the best other option? There's no DS on the bench Cook could throw in there at that point? Yes, I am well aware of sub count limits. But we were deep into a set with runs of points such that neither team was gonna run out of subs. So somebody's gotta explain that one to me. Because it just looks to me like Cook panicking and saying "I gotta do SOMETHING here!" Certainly there is. Knuckles wasn’t just bad, she was visibly rattled. Subbing her out in a game they were going to lose, allows her to take a breath, and “re-set”. You could argue it wasnt the right move, but I can see The rational and it’s far from unprecedented. Knuckles wasn't the only one rattled, Kubik was in a daze at the service line,,,pitiful serving for the Husker SENIOR! She had 7 kill and 0 blocks for the match. You have to get more than that out of a Senior player.

You gotta love how Nebraska fans are. They will spit venom if you're an "outsider" who dares to be critical, but they will eat their young like no other if they lose.
