Jersey Mike's Arena, formerly known as the Rutgers Athletic Center, or "RAC" (pronounced "rack"), hosted many classic concerts in its heyday. Artists who've played there include Styx, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Zappa, Everclear, 10,000 Maniacs, and R.E.M.
On May 15, 1981, the Grateful Dead headlined the RAC. Mother Nature augmented the concert with her own light show, courtesy of a spring thunderstorm, whose lightning flashed through the gym's skylights as the Dead jammed. Many concertgoers were in such a state that they did not realize until later that the lightning was a naturally occurring phenomenon that everyone could behold, and not just part of their own psychedelically augmented personal experience of the ceiling that evening.
