I just don't understand why it is funny though, it is actually a quite common occurrence for this exact situation to happen. It would be like watching shark tank and laughing at the panel investing money in a great idea they know next to nothing about, yet that show has been on tv for almost 15 years or so. Seems a bit premature to call this a 'great idea.' The panel is known for being business people that know business. Derulo is known for singing. It'd be like a celebrity guest appearance shark investing in a company that has been tried before and failed every time. Mildly amusing to say the least. Edit to add: Yes, we all hope this works out. It would be great for the sport. Their money and name ID will give it a boost. It just seems like a stretch to call it a great business investment right now. Sure he is known for singing, but the second act to say the least, has been heavily involved in diversifying his investments and he has seemingly had success. Just look at Kobe before his passing, ARod, Lebron, Beckham, et. None of them primarily known for their business acumen, yet all have had success. If Derulo gets involved to the point he has shown on other ventures, as well as seriously pushing it on his social feeds, it will quickly gain new followers to volleyball and potentially bring in other deep pocketed investors to come along for the ride. And I said it would be like laughing at them for investing in a great idea, never said it was a for sure great business investment.

The product will follow when more people trust that the league is not just another waste of time like all the others we have seen. The marketing is something Derulo can obviously help with very quickly considering his total social following, not just tiktok. As with any new venture all the things that people want to see to jump in quickly are just not going to be there, it is going to take work, trial and error, and patience through the struggle. What is a promising thing is that people with lots of money are not hesitating to get involved early.

Let’s be honest, Derulo isn’t doing any of the marketing work. He’ll share what his team says to and that’s about it
My concern is the owner of the league’s agency is in charge of it… and it’s already bad

Who cares who runs his account, the simple fact that he built up that large of a platform to share anything on is impressive in itself and very beneficial in bringing unique viewers to the league. Considering the infancy of the league, I don't think its necessarily a bad thing that his agency is handling everything at the moment as the overhead to operate that is probably very low while they have zero product to even promote at the moment. www.theremedybranding.com/I too am guilty of being a pessimist at every other attempt to bring pro volleyball stateside, but this seems like one of the most complete attempts we have seen in a while solely based on the amount of deep pockets ready to be involved.

I would be more optimistic if there was volleyball operational experience somewhere in the mix. Reynaud doesn’t cut it. The AVP lacks any kind of effective marketing, as does the WNT, but they have an established product. This league has owners and, potentially, players, but no established product.

Agreed but different scenarios. I think as they keep moving it along there will be a mix of people they seek out as well as people looking to get on the ground floor if the investment money keeps rolling in. The AVP has an established product, but it is considered small market at best and as comparable to a lower minor league baseball team or frontier like team. The majority of players can get a little too entitled and not realize the extra work they need to put in themselves, while a small portion of them kills their own brand and marketing exposure producing more results than the entire league. The WMT doesn't need marketing, they have thousands upon thousands of junior girls that watched them win a Gold medal and one day dream of trying to accomplish the same thing. That Gold medal is enough in itself to drive effort and participation.

(this is an absurd statement... and the reason why USAV is stuck in mediocrity... and high level volleyball in the USA too)

(this is an absurd statement... and the reason why USAV is stuck in mediocrity... and high level volleyball in the USA too) What other marketing would you want out of the WNT? They go around and do camps, sometimes paid appearances for individual clubs, etc. They go and play red and blue games at big qualifiers as well as at nationals. I wish they would have done some sort of multi city "parade" celebrating the Gold Medal, but what else could you be looking for when it is the second most popular girls high school sport and you have kids begging their parents to drop thousands of dollars even if they stink to say that they play on a national team, or even just say they play club? USAV and high level volleyball is stuck in mediocrity because USAV refuses to pony up any money and pay out for individuals to make a living doing professional volleyball stateside in regards to beach, and the fact that we do not have a pro league here. These girls have nothing to aspire to other than playing high level collegiate ball and hope they find a good situation in another country to continue playing after college and hopefully have it be an actual job. But god forbid we stop ourselves from paying out another 6 figure salary for a board member to continue maintaining the mediocracy. You could make the same argument about the WNBA, what marketing do they put out? If it wasn't for the NBA bankrolling them the league would honestly look equivalent to a minor league baseball team or the AVP, or they simply wouldn't exist except for a few exhibition matches to show young girls there is still an opportunity for high level woman's basketball - and we basically dominate the world in both men's and woman's basketball.

Marketing is going to be a huge, uphill battle no matter who or what without a big-market East Coast team.
As many here have pointed out, you can't pay players, office staff, buy equipment, and spend on promotion without ad revenue and a TV deal. Advertisers and media outlets (broadcasters, national sports news, and streaming services) only care about the number of eyeballs that view the games.
They won't be interested until Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston or New York viewers are interested.
Jason Derulo has had some views and some likes, but when ESPNW.com's only mention of this league so far is that the Bengals star QB has invested (and that's a site supposedly dedicated to covering women in sports. Forget that the league is supposed to be heavy in women leadership, a NFL QB has money in it!)... that tells you what this league is up against.
Let's wait and see if we can land one of those four markets.
And before anyone says anything, No, the West Coast and Chicago won't cut it for networks. They need markets in the Eastern Time Zone to entertain the masses in the original colonies.
The East Coast bias is REAL!

Yet completely ignoring that Chicago is one of the biggest broadcast markets and CST is hands down the best for viewing any broadcasts? New York absolutely, Philly yes, Boston meh, and Pittsburgh is not going to care unless they get a team and make them black and yellow. This is from a recent list of major broadcast markets, Pittsburgh landed outside of the top 25. 1 New York, NY 2 Los Angeles, CA 3 Chicago, IL 4 Philadelphia, PA 5 Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX 6 San Francisco-Oak-San Jose 7 Atlanta 8 Houston, TX 9 Washington (Hagerstown), DC-MD 10 Boston (Manchester)

Won't argue with you about the importance of those large markets in other timezones, moderndaycoach.
But, media hubs want games at 7pm EST on the weekdays and early afternoons EST on the weekends to catch the MOST viewers they can who are just watching for something to watch.
As an advertiser, I want the most 16-28 year old girls' eyeballs I can get (and, hopefully, their dads too if we can get the uniforms tight fitting enough) watching teams they may or may not care about because it's the most interesting thing they've noticed om social media or while they were scrolling through their streaming options on their user interface(s). Maybe they're old souls and doing that ol' fashioned Channel surfing.
The Eastern Time Zone is the most populous time zone with the most possible casual viewers. The more games on at those times the better. The more teams like NY, MA, PA, GA, FL the easier it will be to sell volleyball to potential casual fans, traditional media AND streaming services.

Can’t imagine a team would be in the northeast at all.
Florida seems like a hard pass.
What about Atlanta?

Yea, but 7est is 6 in the central, and 4 in the west. People are still coming home from work or just leaving work, getting kids home from practice, and then making/eating dinner in the Midwest, and even then you have people that have at least a couple more hours of work or are barley getting home from school to watch out west. I would argue casual viewers in the east may tune in at at 7EST, but not the majority of casual viewers they would need, hence being stuck watching replays which highly discourages people from watching.

Can’t imagine a team would be in the northeast at all. Florida seems like a hard pass. What about Atlanta? THAT'S where I think Women's Pro Volleyball has marketing potential. It'll be unique. It won't be competing with Hockey or Basketball because it's a women's sport that doesn't feel derivative of an existing sport for men. I think if you target young women and family viewers this small, upstart league DOES have a chance in markets that have other sports teams. The Arena Football League could not get over several bumps like: 1) Being a weird knock-off of another sport 2) Having it's season run against either playoff NHL and NBA or against baseball and people wanting to be outside in the summer. I don't have high hopes for pickelball. Like bowling, it's more fun to play than watch. Women's volleyball after the NFL season targeting different audiences than the NBA or NHL has awesome potential... we just need people unfamiliar with the sport to notice... so... Jason Derulo is a great start, but, we NEED traditional sports markets to sell this to traditional ad execs and media moguls.

Can’t imagine a team would be in the northeast at all. Florida seems like a hard pass. What about Atlanta? Why would Florida be a hard pass? It may not be up there in broadcast market, but you have players readily available and other players may be inclined to leave the cold and live there. In the days of the PVL- Florida Wave was one of the strong, popular, consistently good teams that even started to have lower level teams as well. Atlanta would also be a strong market in regards to creating regional divisions, but you would start to get overcrowded regionally with New York, Boston, Philly, Pittsburgh, Florida, Chicago, Nebrasks, Ohio, etc. without moving out west also.
